Well it's dominance can only diminish over time, because it's place in the skyline is dependent on it being tall and thin and isolated. Once other similarly tall towers rise in that area, it will - as mentioned - fade into the crowd.

I think it's a good looking building, but as its context changes it will get less impressive, rather than more.

Being as tall and as thin as it is, it will always be very impressive to me unless someone builds something thinner and taller without setbacks.

That last shot zoomed in is breathtaking and a little scary. The more isolationist the tower becomes, the more apparent of just how slender of a ratio this thing has. Some angles still give me the impression that it'll snap like a twig in a gale, but of course structurally I know better...

Hope the workers can have everything secured on the upper floors with that storm coming through.

Exactly. Which, extrapolated, suggests 432 and other such buildings have nothing in their design that offers originality or inspiration.

Hope that explains the premise behind the "kids drawing" association.

So what will the final two "floors" look like from the exterior? Simply darkened windows? Has there been an explanation for why Vinoly simply didn't extend the building two stories more, retaining the proportionality of the residential blocks vs utilitarian levels?

Haha yes im mainly thinking about the 100+ kph winds, lightning and blowing snow. Plus i highly doubt that anyone is up there by now as there will be no cars from 11 pm on and the wind up there will maybe be even more than 100 kph. Even though it is unlikely i hope we dont get another one57 scenario here

Why don't people call any other building with individual windows as something a kid would draw? Like those slightly setbacked Stern buildings. kids draw those all the time

It just sounds philistinic to me

The visual proportions are still there; 12 floors of windows separated by 2 floors of open air. It's just that the top two "floors" are not actually occupied, because that's how much space was needed for rooftop mechanicals. Viñoly could have made the mechanicals two floors higher and had an open air crown on top of 12 glass floors... But the open floors are meant to be the connective tissue between the much more solid "mini-towers," and I think ending the pattern that way would look incomplete.

I imagine the top two floors will be lit from within at night to complete the illusion of 12 floors... although since there's no roof, I think they will probably look noticeably different in the daytime.

You really think other bldgs. aren't chided as plain, boring, ugly, etc.?

I'd guess more get criticized than get praised. Such is the nature of art.

Oh, I definitely think they're both ugly. It sure helped the WTC that it was in Lower Manhattan and seemed to be double the height of their surroundings, but I still think they're ugly.

that's nowhere close to 50 miles... it's either that or that's an impressive zoom. Fort Lee is right there over a few hills.
