Put simply, each parcel and each block has a certain overall size capacity dictated by the City, meaning they can only be built up so much. This is to ensure that they don't exceed utility capacity, emergency response capability and to ensure the resulting traffic (foot, vehicle, etc) from those residences and/or businesses doesn't cause too much congestion. So there is basically an overall budget regarding the amount of square footage assigned to each property. A square footage amount which can also be bought and traded among lots to enable some lots to exceed their assigned capacity.

So when designing for height you're taking into account the overall capacity allowed and the particular design you want to achieve. Meaning the higher you want to go (for views) then the more cutbacks you must feature or simply build skinny.

There's also the efficiency of the design itself. Skinny buildings are one way to minimize possibly excess floor space. You build exactly what's needed for the appointed use and no more.
Thanks,

Makes perfect sense. But hey I have a solution that gets the city around all those problems while still doubling the building capacity.

Just make it a rule that in those blocks at least half the apartments must be sold to rich foreigners. I mean those are buying most apartments anyway but make it mandatory. Since they only live there a few weeks of the year all the described problems of congestion etc etc are a non-issue.

So, build more, tax the builders extra, make sure 50% or more are sold to people who don't live there and rake in the money with no extra services needed to be provided.

Tell your mayor to send me a few percent.

Lol, hell no. Did you forget Empire State Building and OWTC? They are symbols of the city. This stick will never be the most photographed one.

But the truth is, it may be the most inadvertently photographed building. It pops up from everywhere!

True. It is so much taller than the nearby towers that this is inevitable.

it'll be that building that happens to ruin people's shots when taking pictures of Manhattan or New York

This building is a total mistake... IMHO, it has dwarved the Empire State in some views, and is nothing but a repetition of small squares.

old buildings are meant to be dwarven! never go full europe, or you lose potential just for the sake of one building.

This is an amazing example of 21st century architecture, showing how you can make a super tall on such a small lot. Anyway, I live in New York and believe that this building is better than Empire State Building. It represents the future and I think that's really cool.

They should have coated it with that water repelant paint they use in Germany to stop people from peeing on buildings.
