I thought the same a few month ago.
But the longer i saw it rising the more and more i was fascinated by the slim and simple design. It's pure without any senseless deco elements. For me it's nice now and a great enrichment to the skyline.

A non ornamental building in a time where retro is "the thing" might be hard to digest for most.

For me, thing that makes 432 so good is the way it's so incredebly essential. The building is basicly a giant concrete skeleton. But this skeleton is also the the cladding ánd a large part of the interiors it provides. Structure, facade and interior in one huge white concrete cast. Quite brilliant.

And I'm as big a fan of 432 Park as anyone but design-wise it's not even in the same league. Of the new supertalls u/c I can only think of TV and Steinway (and maybe Nordstrom, depending on how it turns out) that can challenge if not surpass the ESB in terms of design. But 432 Park? No way!!
I wouldn't describe ESB as such a masterpiece, in fact there are waaaaayyy better and prettier buildings, both old and new. But, you know, they aren't the ESB, he IS the king though, no other skyscraper in the world is just as symbolic (the same for old WTC vs new WTC). Again, design wise I think 432 Park and ESB, are tied, or 432 winning by a tiny bit. Give this tower a time, 10 years from know you'll look into the skyline and will whink it's been there forever.

Why does everything have to be some comparison contest? The reason the NYC skyline is so iconic is the variety. I'll take ESB AND 432 Park, please. Spires and boxes and glass and masonry and height and density and history and art deco and stark minimalism and all of that is what makes New York special. None of the buildings are as impressive when standing alone...they all benefit from each other. It's hard to put a foot wrong architecturally speaking because everything just gets enveloped into the glorious fabric and melting pot of styles that so mirror the cultural and ethnic melting pot of society there.

It is glorious and found on a scale there that no other place on this planet can match!

Exactly! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and their favorite building, but for me it comes down to the collective. All of these buildings in Manhattan together make it such a great looking city.

We could also say: NYC is turning into a real mess. The sore thumb that is 432 PA aggravates this.

Everyone is entitled to like it, but for me, Manhattan is ruined by boxes. It can have all the styles it wants, but skyscrapers need to be slender and soaring, with setbacks and elegance. That's what really makes or rather made this place for me. Cityscape steadily ruined. Finally re-introduce the Zoning Resolution for setbacks!

I'm a bit more hopeful with soaring designs like One57, Tower Verre, Steinway Tower, Nordstrom, One Vanderbilt, and various Robert Stern / RAMSA towers though.

In those pictures above, you can see it is true that quote that says that from the top of the ESB, on a clear day you can see forever.

432 Park is impressive and it's iconic for a Park Avenue tower.

The Empire State Building is just flat out ICONIC PERIOD. No matter how many great towers rising in our skyline, the ESB is and always will be the heartbeat of NYC.

Funny thing! True story.

A tourist came up to me the other day and asked me which one is the Empire State Building.

This tower does look out of place... but is easy to fix the problem...

Just build a +500m near it, and will look less tall and alone.

Everyone have it's pick, mine is Chrysler, over ESB, so no matter how tall they might build in the future, Chrysler will still be first for me.

There is no other building in the world as slender as 432 PA! And it really soars above everything else around it! Your statement is filled with contradiction!

I did a presentation today in a relatively high-floor conference room at 30 Rock - this was my backdrop....in a way, I'm actually kind of glad the weather was so crappy - otherwise I would have been VERY distracted.....:
