I never saw that coming!

For clarification: it is ironic because the One World was supposed to be an important symbol and the "tallest tower in the West", though only by virtue of its 100m+ spire, it's highest occupied floor having been limited mostly by neurotic (I don't blame them though) fears of a future terrorist attack. Now this tiny residential tower is arguably taller than it.

That is something not ironic at all, it is simply a taller tower by roof height, that's it. 1WTC IS a symbol, and the primary pourpose was never to be the tallest tower, but to restore the lost skyline. From the early proposals it was supposed to have a spire resembling the Statue of Liberty. And the reason they didn't make it taller was not because a neurotic fear, but because the choose to make it the exact same height of the destroyed towers. If it was for fear, they wouldn't have made it exactly the same height of the destroyed towers, but half its height.

But even if they wanted the tallest tower and another surpasses it, well, that wouldn't be ironic, it is just that somebody build a taller tower. That was just as 1930 when in the war for the sky, Chrysler building surpassed at the last moment 40 Wall Street, winning the war, but just to be surpassed again, just a year after and by a wide margin, by the ESB. Nothing there was ironic, just some buildings surpassing each other in height.

And anyway, if you want to measure it by roof height, 1WTC was surpassed, even before they began to build it, by the Sears Tower and Taipei 500, not to mention that by the time they completed it, Burj Dubai was already built, and it is taller, by pinnacle height, by a wide margin, so, whatever. Not Ironic, just anecdotic.

You copy and past the BBcode , try to use the smallest large size as to not overwhelm the page.

September 2015 update. Most of the tower is glassed in. During late afternoon, it shines with a surprisingly bright shimmer. I underestimated how much reflective surface all the glass adds up to. The window of opportunity for this effect is rather brief, though, and I intend to capture it on photo and/or video as soon as I get the chance.
