Ah Ok, thanks, my eyes were playing tricks on me. Looking better again, I can see now it is a different building. I did know that it was getting a condo conversion, so, when I saw the picture and that building in construction from that angle, I really thought they were stripping bare the Sony Building Good it is not the case.

^That's a great angle Lt. H Caine. It demonstrates to me how 432's height is deceptive. With only 89 floors, it looks shorter next to the empire state (102fl) than it really is. If 432 Park had the typical residential floor height of ~10 feet. It would have 139 floors and probably look way taller next to other buildings.

432 does look taller because it is taller. Way taller.

It's not the angle of that shot but the fact that 432 is more than a mile behind the ESB making 432 seem shorter.

This image illustrates:

The very large window size also makes it look closer than it really is.

Oh no doubt it's way taller.

My point is about the perspective of floor heights causing a bit of an illusion.

In that photo, even though 432 Park is almost a mile behind the empire state (and its roof height is hundreds of feet higher), the difference in floor heights between the two buildings gives the illusion that it's shorter than it is (or closer, at the very least).

Below, I zoomed in to just the facades of the two buildings in that pic (https://flic.kr/p/C7rjGh) to show what I mean. Could be just me, it's just something I've noticed about 432 relative to other buildings when closer up. From far away or silhouetted it definitely holds reign over the skyline.

You can't say it's the floor heights that make it seem shorter since in that specific image it's the forced perspective that is 100% responsible for the distortion in relative heights.

Look at the side-on image: the floor heights are visible but 432 certainly appears at it's actual height.

I do understand your point about structural details affecting perception (buildings with vertical lines tend to look taller than those with lots of horizontal detail) but it doesn't apply to that image.

Here's 432 with modified floor heights. Seems the same to me.

I was able to find this one. You can see that 432 Park is just slightly taller. Roof height of 1WTC is 1,368.
