How many light drums are there in total? 3? Maybe 4?
And the blue tint on the windows will be removed eventually correct?

I think there are five two-floor mechanical modules with drums.

I don't care if people call it bland, I actually really like this building. It could have been a little more interesting yea, but it's still an awesome addition.

I think the best views are at a 45 degree angle to the vertical plane of any side of the tower. It better allows you to see the drums and for light to pass through the corners like above

Just my opinion..
Simple? Yes.
Unique? Yes. Doesn't go with the all glass trend..
Beautiful? To each his own.. but for me.. Yes.
Fitting? Yes.

When the natural light of the day passes through the drums.. I believe it's going to be amazing. Imagine during some crazy sunsets! Looking forward to see the levitating feeling of those drums.

I was walking by it last night and took some pics from my phone...

It's quite the structure.

Off topic but as it appears pretty often in the pics: the beautiful 601 Lexington Avenue deserves definitely a reclad!!

If not a reclad, I think a good facade cleaning would do her a world of good. There's nothing wrong with the design of her facade, it doesn't look outdated nor is it failing- it's just in need of a scrubbing.

What's the point of those "mechanical floors"? It seems like a whole lot of empty space. Around those drums there's nothing, and 10 floors of it? At about 60million per floor, that's 600million down the "mechanical drain". I don't get it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but mechanical floors don't count against total buildable square footage. So if they weren't there, it's not like they could've built 10 additional floors of condos -- the tower would've just been 10 floors shorter (and the value of the uppermost units with the best views would've dropped precipitously).

On top of that, as has been discussed here a few times, the open air floors create wind breaks that relieve lateral stress and reduce sway. You'll see this in these ultra skinny towers, most notably 111 W. 57th right down the street, which has at least 3 wind breaks.

And from a pure aesthetic point of view, I think the open mech floors and the "floating towers" illusion improves the design 100x over a version where every floor has windows.
