Last night I was lucky enough to fly with @nyonair on a beautiful helicopter ride above New York City. The flight truly offered a new perspective of my hometown, including this shot I captured of 432 Park Avenue. At a height of 1,396 ft (426 m), the building will contain 104 condominium apartments and will be the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere. The building is so thin and so tall (1:15 width to height ratio) that in order to achieve structural stability, two levels are left completely exposed every 12 floors so that wind passes through and the building sways less.

That, sir, is a fantastic shot. Got any more?

It occurs to me a decent snowfall would inundate the deeply enclosed mechanical space on top. But they must have a contingency plan for that.

Something I have been wondering about....

This platform has been in place on the south east corner of the building around the 45th floor (the 3rd mechanical level from the top) for almost 5 months - here's a shot from this morning:

...and here's a shot of the platform being installed around February 20:

I've been wondering for a long time what they are working on here - does anyone know or have any theories?

Coincidentally (I assume), the last time I saw the the mechanical floors lit up on was on February 17:

Here's the view this morning - the building almost seems less "complete" now than it did almost 5 months ago:

Again, does anyone have any insight? Is it just that the "devil is in the details" and the finishing touches can be expected to go a lot slower than the more visibly dramatic floor-by-floor rise of the tower? Or is there some specific problem they are struggling with?

Also, snapped this through an airplane window Tuesday afternoon - a little blurry, but not too bad for a cell phone shot! (click for full size):

Tasty.

No matter how many times we see NYC, there's always a new angle to appreciate it from. Your shot is reminiscent of a table-top model. Nice detail on the Triborough.

Hi, so I understand the height of the building is 1,396 feet. But I'm assuming that is the height of the edge/parapet which extends about two story heights from the actual roof. Does anyone know the actual height of the roof? Thanks

Instead of demolished building 30 East 60th Street is building a new skyscraper.

Actually I'm pretty sure the original pic is correct...I guess it might look flipped if you're viewing it from the southern hemisphere though......

You're right. It's an unusual angle shooting south from the Upper East Side.

But I'll blame the southern hemisphere...
