What bothers me, is that the only reason their are die hard defenders of this building, is because it's very tall, and they want a new highest roof height in NYC. There isn't any argument for this building. It's not unique, its facade is ugly, it's certainly not beautiful, and it has no style. It will tower above everything else, and be an eyesore. This building will destroy the Manhattan skyline.

Tower Verre, 157, Chrysler Building, Beekman, 40 Wall Street, Trump World Tower, AIG Tower, Bloomberg Tower, Woolworth Building and many shorter buildings in NYC are thin too, yet nobody complains about them. And they aren't short either and most of the taller ones make impact on the skyline

yes, but those are different buildings. You can't just say "They like this building, why they don't like 432". It's stupid

But in my opinion thinness (is that even a word, LOL? ) is an element which when liked on one building, shouldn't be hated on another building simply because it is not something that can be designed. A building is either fat or thin, end of it, there's nothing more to say about its width.

Ok, but there is more to the building's look than just it's width, isn't it?

You forget about:

- proportions
- shape
- tapering/not tapering
- location
- cladding (this one the most taste dependent I think)

'It's not unique'

Talking of a 19:1 tower,

'facade is ugly'

that you've never seen.

'certainly not beautiful'

Does every tower have to be?

'has no style'

Opinion.

Keep in mind that I am of the opinion that this should be reduced in height, but would rather see this rise than an old hotel rot. The best news of the year was 225 west. If it is as high as ~380~ it, along with one57, tower verre, and 432 park, will form a row of supertalls that hopefully will look reasonably proportioned.

Currently, four 300m+ residential towers are planned for the Plaza District. This will fit in very nicely with the other three. Moreover, more likely will rise in light of the profit margins at issue.

In addition, Midtown (south of the Plaza District) has three supertalls planned for the HY, two for Manhattan West, 15 Penn, and scores more!

Other cities should have this problem.

Ok I thought I would never say this but I agree 100% with Kanto...this building is going to be an icon with its simplistic box design and height, it is truly going to be one of a kind... An amazing addition to the NYC skyline

I think people under estimate the emotional power that a clean simple design can offer...this tower is going to stand the test of time wether you like it now or not. It's beautiful.

I donīt know people but I like it. Itīll look extremely tall because itīs thinness.
Btw there are plenty of boxes in NYC and they look good so I donīt think itīll ruin the skyline.

Here's the thing: you can't ruin the Midtown skyline, because it's messy as it gets. Lower Manhattan with the WFC, WTC etc. is more planned and balanced, whereas Mitdown is regarded as the concrete jungle.

About the tower: I like it and I think it will be very elegant. As RW said, the materials and cladding will be of high quality, so it will look pretty good.
