No, they can't even get a decent Summer Games!

damn straight - the CWG are barely relevant - I'm hoping Delhi changes this

a winter variation would be like the summer version, just instead of Australia dominating everything and England getting some, it will be Canada getting everything and England getting some

would rather watch paint dry

Ideally yes, but it doesn't make any practical sense. The medal table would look something like this:

1. Canada 80 gold, 80 silver, 80 bronze (240 medals)
2. Australia 3 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze (9 medals)
3. Scotland 2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze (6 medals)
4. New Zealand 1 gold, 1 silver, 0 bronze (2 medals)
5. England 0 gold, 0 silver, 1 bronze (1 medal)

It would end up looking more like a Canadian national winter sports championship with the other Commonwealth nations as spectators. Canada wouldn't even find any interest in that. It's competition that makes things entertaining. The rest of the Commonwealth can't provide any.

Are there even sufficient countries to participate in winter sports?

What a load of crap! The winter Olympics gets 1 billion+ viewers. Do you think networks are forking out all that cash because they're running a charity?

No, Canada is the only strong winter sports nation in the Commonwealth. Canada would sweep almost every event. The rest of the Commonwealth are only competitive in summer sports.

Summer CWG = best. I really do enjoy seeing the tally end like this,

Australia - 84 Gold, 69 Silver, 69 Bronze (Total 222 medals)
England - 36 Gold, 40 Silver, 34 Bronze (Total 110 medals)
Canada - 26 Gold, 29 Silver, 31 Bronze (Total 86 medals)
India - 22 Gold, 17 Silver, 11 Bronze (Total 50 medals)
South Africa - 12 Gold, 13 Silver, 13 Bronze (Total 38 medals)
Melbourne 2006 Results

Just consider yourself lucky that the CWG is heavily skewed to sports Australia is good at. If all sports were contested, the tally would look vastly different.

How many of the commonwealth countries have winters that would be suitable for winter sports?

I know England, for example, is regarded as a cold country to a lot of people in the world, but it's still and area where grown adults get giddy with excitement if it starts to snow.

Was there ever any serious discussion about this or it was dismissed long ago as not feasible?
