The huge "Germany THEN AND NOW" comparison thread
Hello,
first i don't own any of the pictures. The copyright has bildindex.de and Microsoft! Which materials were used? "A newly discovered collection of more than 3,000 aerial photographs of Germany before and during the allied bombing campaign of the second world war. The photographs, taken diagonally with special cameras from low-flying aircraft, offer detailed views of buildings. They concentrate on Germany's inner cities, which are shown in their full baroque and gothic splendour. " I already made a thread about the pictures http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...1#post50426761 It seems that the majority of the 3000 photographs are still waited to be uploaded. Hosted by bildindex.de AND i used Bing Maps. Made by Microsoft. Here is the link. Image shows a Flaktower in Vienna-Augarten http://www.bing.com/maps/default.asp...3612&encType=1 Because the black-white photographs and the color photographs from bing were done in the bird view, i think it fits more or less perfect to compare then and now. I think it's interessting to see how places changed. I will post the first and the last arieal view, for the rest i poste the links to the uploaded pics. It would be too much to post them all. I left out Berlin, Cologne, Dresden and Frankfurt, because i think many users have seen "then and now"-photos of the 4 cities so far. I give first the black and white image, then the colored one. I don't know how old the color pics are. My guess they were done between 2005 and 2010. Allright, here we go. BUT please(!) keep out dissucions in this thread why bombed and how, etc. We all know and it has been discussed hundres times. THANKS! These are amazing, but I wish you could post pics directly. most people are too lazy. I remember when I was in Koln in 1994 and was very dissappointed with old town, but the cathedral was tremendous.

So many ugly commies.
Munich has held up pretty well, but Dusseldorf... oh dear. Shame the war had to destroy so much beautiful architecture, not just in Germany, but all over Europe.

I see what you mean about Nurmberg...it was amazing and typical of most reconstruction after the war, the old areas are thinned out and smoothed out, that is most details on buildings that so animate them are not replaced.

@Urbanista1, I know but it's more than 30 pictures in whole, possibly between 40 and 50.
@wolfpaw and novaguy, yes it is. it is sad, but on the hand we are lucky to get an view how it once looked, hopefully will never be forgotten ![]() @Batavier, thanks! ![]() @Botswana Why Düsseldorf. I dont thin it's that bad. Watch Chemnitz and Gießen!!! That's fucked up, imo! Braunschweig and Hamburg too!! Same with Stuttgart!!! Last edited by Dr.Mabuse; August 22nd, 2010 at 12:01 PM. |

I had noticed Aachen took a beating during world war 2 when i visited the town but what really shocks me is something what clearly happend afterwards. The square between the cathedral and the townhall looks like it survived mostly unscathed and even the buildings that where damaged could have been easily been renovated. And then they tear down half of the square and replace them with those monstrosities?

well, the bw-photos were made during the war BEFORE 45 and late 44. So it could be that the square and place around the cathedral was much more damaged in 1945. Sadly i can not find a picture in the inter which shows that square in 45. But in other cases you are right. I made a thread about that, if you can read german, take a look http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...572&highlight= A quotation of a videoclip about Berlin: Ruin of the Lertherrailwaystaion got demolished. Now place for Berlins most modern raiölwaystation. What could be teared down, was teared down. Down with beauty, down with stucco, down with ornaments. everything was demolished in east and west. The murdered city. And this was similiar in dozend different german cities. Plans by the authorities. Another (luckily positive) example. The golden hall in Augbsburg. rebuilded in orginal. ![]() http://www.schreinerinnung-augsburg....ner_saal_1.jpg The autohrities in augsburg did an announcement for architecs to send them ideas how the golden hall could look like, but the autorites did not like any ideas of the architects. LUCKILY!!! Here is why we are lucky to have the hall in original-look. These are some pantings of architects in the 1950's for the golden haal announcment. What about this instead of the original look? ![]() http://www.hdbg.de/wiederaufbau/goldener-saal/001-g.jpg Isn't this modern charming? Not this oold backwared golden style ![]() ![]() http://www.hdbg.de/wiederaufbau/goldener-saal/004-g.jpg Insteat of intresting golden stucco, wall and ceiling paintings, simply a boring red. This is the way to go. Red is the color of the future, was a tought of this architect maybe. ![]() http://www.hdbg.de/wiederaufbau/goldener-saal/010-g.jpg Soruce: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...er+saal&page=2 Take a look in this ![]() http://www.stadtbild-deutschland.de/rekoliste.php |

That last "red" picture is actually very nice. Looks like a modern interpretation of a roman building. Of course, can't compare it to the original hall, but I wouldn't mind having modern architecture looking like that.
These proposals were nice too: ![]() http://www.hdbg.de/wiederaufbau/goldener-saal/008-g.jpg ![]() http://www.hdbg.de/wiederaufbau/goldener-saal/003-g.jpg Last edited by Leugom; August 22nd, 2010 at 11:45 PM. |

Dr. Mabuse. Do you have any pre-war pics of Magdeburg. I didn't see any above. My grandmother used to visit friends there before the war as it was near her favourite city of Dresden. She was quite an international jet-setter for her time.
