When there is almost a billion federal dollars on the line I think this project absolutely makes sense. Yeah it serves the suburbs but it does serve major job centers and future TOD that is already taking place in the suburbia. Uptown and midtown has midtown corridor and nicollet/central streetcar corridors for transit users that is on the pipeline. And this line(SWLRT) is very far ahead in the planning stages. So absolutely doesn't make sense to kill it now.

Met Council unveils plan to cover state share of Southwest LRT funding

Little sigh of hope. When the going gets tough the tough gets going.

Quote:
Met Council Chair Adam Duininck: “I want to be very clear, these are bad options.”

The Metropolitan Council intends to proceed with the Southwest light rail project, despite a failure of the 2016 Legislature to come up with the final piece of state and local funding for the 14.5 mile extension of the Green Line.

At a meeting convened by Gov. Mark Dayton Thursday, the council revealed a plan to replace the state’s 10 percent share of the $1.84 billion project with money from the Met Council, Hennepin County and the five-county Counties Transportation Improvement Board (CTIB).

Those three bodies must approve their part of the final $144.5 million funding piece by next Wednesday, when the council says it will have to begin shutting down the project if the funding isn’t approved.

“I want to be very clear, these are bad options,” Met Council Chair Adam Duininck said Thursday. “If there’s not a state solution at the legislative level, the only options are bad options.” But he argued that if the state delays now, mothballing the project, it will not be able to get back in line behind dozens of other projects from other parts of the country...

With Met Council vote, Southwest LRT funding gap is filled

“With this action today, we will have a project,” Met Council Chair Adam Duininck

Quote:
The $144.5 million Southwest light rail transit funding gap is officially filled after months of debates between state leaders and hand-wringing from regional planners.
The Metropolitan Council unanimously voted Wednesday evening to fill the final piece of the project by agreeing to finance $91.75 million in certificates of participation.
The Counties Transit Improvement Board and the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority will fill the remainder of the gap through a combination of additional funding and certificates of participation.

SOUTHWEST LRT SECURES FUNDING TO APPLY FOR FEDERAL MATCH

Quote:
-The Southwest LRT Project is officially moving forward, after securing the remaining local funding commitments this week

-These contributions will together fill a $144.5 million funding gap, made up by the remaining necessary state match of $135 million plus $9.5 million in local delay costs caused by the legislature’s inaction in May.

-As a result of this week’s actions, the federal government will now prepare to execute an agreement next year to pay half the project’s costs, which amount to nearly $929 million of the $1.858 billion project.

Here is a diagram how the funding will be set up for the project.

Parallel tracks: Can the Twin Cities build two light rail projects at once?

Nothing new just a commentary from Peter Callaghan on MinnPost.

Quote:
Once years apart, both the Southwest Light Rail Transit and the Bottineau Line are now on nearly parallel tracks. If they continue to clear the many planning and money hurdles — Bottineau, for one, still has to secure $149 million in nonfederal funding — they will both begin passenger service about eight months apart in 2021. That means that for parts of 2018, 2019 and 2020, Metro Transit could be building the two lines simultaneously. (That’s in addition to the C Line, the region’s second arterial bus rapid transit line, which could be under construction in the same time period.)
https://www.minnpost.com/politics-po...-projects-once

I think it is possible to build two lines at once as long as there is political will from the lawmakers.

Despite the uncertainty that is looming Met Council is going to proceed with this project anyway. It is hard to get excited due to the changing of the guard in Washington and at the state level. Keeping fingers crossed I really hope both Green and Blue Line extension gets built.

Quote:
Planners for the Southwest Light Rail Transit line are gearing up to release the first of three major bid packages for contractors interested in working on the $1.8 billion project. The civil construction package will be opened for bids in January.
The 14.5-mile Southwest line will run between downtown Minneapolis and Eden Prairie, stopping in St. Louis Park, Hopkins and Minnetonka. But before the package is released, the Metropolitan Council — the regional planning agency behind the project — will host a contractor information meeting and mixer Dec. 5.
