The city is slowly becoming a fashion hotspot with several fashion events being held across Kochi so often. A recent fashion do was full of glitz, glamour and fun. The event saw models sashaying in trendy outfits.

They set the ramp on fire with oomph. The do turned out to be a platform for fashionistas to hobnob over drinks and yummy snacks. That's not all. The DJ, who played heart-thumping music, got everyone present into party mode. The guests not only had a great time but also showed off some of their best moves on the dance floor.

Girls getting hooked to steroids

KOCHI: Young girls in the city are madly seeking out all available means to enhance their beauty. Cashing in on this trend, the city is emerging as a major destination for rackets that supply imported steroid-based drugs that are being sold extensively through beauty parlours as beauty and body enhancing products.

These rackets now supply products of various brands, which are high on steroids and used specifically to get visible results in matter of weeks.

Alarmed over the thriving illegal sale of such products, the district administration has scheduled an emergency meeting on November 19 to discuss the steps that need to be taken to check the sale of such drugs. District drugs controller M R Pradeep told TOI that officials of police and excise departments would attend the meeting.

"We have specific inputs on the sale of such drugs through beauty parlours, which sell them as food supplements. They, however, are drugs which to be sold, require licence from the drugs department," he said.

Officials said these rackets were smuggling in glutathione-based drugs and cosmetic products that contain hydroquinone and its monobenzyl, monoethyl and monomethyl ethers which are banned in India.

The city police have already been put on alert to check the smuggling of such products, and the shadow police team has been able to bust rackets that were illegally distributing protein-based steroids. In February, shadow police arrested a person from the city who was illegally transporting nine cartons of protein-based steroids valued at Rs 1.18 lakh.On September 25 last year, the customs intelligence wing in Kochi international airport seized two cartons containing 276 plastic containers of capsules and steroids worth Rs 4.96 lakh from a passenger, Abdul Majeed (41), who had landed from Sharjah.

When contacted, a beautician in a leading beauty clinic said that they recommended steroids-based products only for people with lower body mass index.

Hari Anand unveils ‘The Kara’ collection

Kochi-based fashion designer Hari Anand has launched ‘The Kara’series of designs at the recent Kingfisher Premium Coimbatore Fashion Week 2012 in Coimbatore. Anand opened the show with his collection.

Kara is the aesthetic way to the represent dominance of a garment. In other words ‘Kara’ means border. It brings in grace, whimsicality, softness and feel of an edge. Anand believes simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication. Anand crafted his line this time with lot of detailing and focus including the footwear. This is the first attempt of his kind in India to bring down classy matching footwear to the garment embellished in the same manner. He has done a lot of R&D for this collection to get the feel and harmony. The collections are of pure Indian garments with a modern touch.

The showstoppers of the show were Ganesh Venkataraman, and Miss India Earth 2008 and actress Tanvi Vyas. They made a grand entry as they waltzed on the ramp. Anand based from Kochi has a long history in fashion. He ventured into the fashion world in 1992 when he opened ‘Glada’, the first designer boutique in Kochi to show cases all his collections.
