NOTIFICATIONS TO MODS

Forumers, this thread is solely for you to notify the Mods when a Proposed Stadium o Sports Arena has moved from the planning stage and has begun construction.

You must be absolutely certain that the construction has begun. There a few ways of doing so. In the thread in question, post pictures or an official release (of any kind).

Include here in your post the link to the thread you want moved to "UNDER CONSTRUCTION".

Thanks,

Mods

Greetings moderators. I would like to propose this thread for a shift from proposed to under construction.

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=572778

It seems that the ground breaking ceremony just occurred today. Here is the article from the Channel News Asia website.

Quote:
Finally, groundbreaking ceremony for Sports Hub
By Patwant Singh | Posted: 29 September 2010 1729 hrs

SINGAPORE: After a two-year delay, a groundbreaking ceremony was finally held on Wednesday for the S$1.33 billion Sports Hub at Kallang. The facility, which will be ready by April 2014, will take the place of the National Stadium.

After 37 years, the "Grand Old Dame" of Singapore sports is calling it a day. Four excavators crushed the main structure of the stadium on Wednesday. The moment was witnessed by Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and invited guests.

The demolition of the stadium is expected to be completed by March next year, and construction work will then follow on the Sports Hub.

The Singapore Sports Hub Consortium (SSHC), led by Dragages Singapore, will build and operate the Sports Hub for the next 25 years.

The new facility will be Singapore's premier land and sea sports, leisure and entertainment hub.

It boasts a 55,000-capacity stadium with a retractable roof; a 6,000-capacity indoor Aquatic Centre that meets world tournament standards; a 3,000-capacity multi-purpose arena which will be scalable and flexible in layout; 41,000 square metres of commercial space; a Water Sports Centre; the existing 11,000-capacity Singapore Indoor Stadium; and supporting leisure and commercial developments.

Ludwig Reichhold, managing director of Dragages Singapore, said: "It's a very large project. Fortunately it comes at a time when the (construction) industry has cooled down a little bit, so there will be enough resources available in Singapore in terms of materials and labour."

For the mega project to succeed, it will need the right events to attract the crowds.

According to World Sport Group, a sports marketing, event management and media company, a number of events organisers have indicated their interest to be the among the first to stage events at the Sports Hub.

"We have got a lot of interest in helping us create a big bang for the opening festival," said Andrew Georgiou, Chief Operating Officer of World Sport Group.

Demolition work on the National Stadium was originally slated to begin in 2008, however, the project was delayed due to the global financial crisis of 2007 and high construction costs.

The new Sports Hub was initially planned for completion in 2011 but was delayed.

The National Stadium has touched the lives of many Singaporeans and hosted big names like the great boxer Muhammad Ali, the late John Paul II, the late pop icon Michael Jackson, among others.

To relive all those memories, there's a commemorative book. Five thousand copies of the book will be printed, costing S$20 each.

I don't know if it's the right thread for that: but please, dear mods, could you make the IRB Rugby WC 2011 "Sticky" ? Just like you did with the RSA FIFA WC thread(s) last year...
