Brussels as seen by Filou

In this thread, I'll try to show a different aspect of Brussels. I will not post pictures of the 'Grand Place' or the atomium but I'll try to show how I experience Brussels every day. I'm not a good photographer and I have only a very small pocket camera, but I have it on me all the time...
It's Brussel how I see it.

Brussels beach this summer, we had a couple of mojito's at 5 euro's each...

Brussels by night...

Yesterday at the Parvis in Saint Gillis: rollerparade

Place Bethlehem, know for it's greek restaurants:

Matongé, the African quarter:

I will post pictures regularly. Hope you like it.

It is and it stays an interesting city.

I go quite a lot to BXL but every time I discover something totally diffent.

For its size it must be one of the most diverse cities in Europe.

That's what I love about Brussels. The mixture of.... everything!

The lovely neighbourhoods and shabby suburbs.
The cold Eurocrats and warm Africans.
The shiny office boxes and colourful art nouveau.
The wide greenspaces and concrete jungle...

Thanks for posting your pictures Filou, not bad for a pocket cam.
Looking forward to more.!

True, even though I really hope they will shape up a bit of the shabbyness.

Especially the area around the canal is really painful to see.

In Brussels, your urban emotions are constantly being ping-ponged between pain and awe. Love it!

I don't see why the shabiness would be something to be proud of... I think there's to much of it in Brussels, even in the city center which is unforgivable.

It's good they'll try to improve these areas.

I'm not 'proud' of it. But I don't hate it either.
It's just a part of the big city. There are shabby area's in a lot of big cities all over Europe and the rest of the world.
Not every corner must be spic and span clean.

St.-Gilles is very populated (around 20.000 inh. per square kilometer)
That's why you find several parks inside building blocks. A lot of people don't know these parks are there, but the locals appreciate them a lot.
This park is situated next to the metro station "parvis de saint gilles" and is really beautifull.

Back to Elsene/ixelles, near the ponds, just behind the place Flagey. Their we find the abbey of La Cambre/Terkameren.
It's another spot of peace en quiet in the buzy city:

From the ponds you have direct access to the abbey

I had a stroll in the Marolles, it's always nice there.

We start at the Hallepoort/porte de Hal.

Starting point to Santiago de compostella.

A place with many names

The Marolles swimming pool. a remarkable building.

Ambiance in the vossenstraat/rue des renards (Foxstreet)

The famous café "'t werm woeter" (hot water)

"
The Brussels "ketjes": Kwik and Flupke

Dit beeld zien we natuurlijk in elke fotoreeks over de marollen:

Here lives our "friend" jaspers, the architect who gave Brussels a lot of buildings with blue glass...

The son came out from behind the clouds at a bad moment.

This terrace in not open yet...
