We all know that baroque is mostly known for it's high detailed buildings, but not always, so I'm going to present you the baroque used for military purposes.

Firstly I will start with my own city called Osijek in eastern part of Croatia.

TVRĐA

Tvrđa is the oldest part of the city Osijek, built as a citadel mostly during the 18th century with purpose of defending eastern border of then Habsburg Empire against Ottomans. It was a typical star shaped fortress of that time that had several barracks, churches, city administration, taverns, printing office, post office, water supply, sewerage, residential buildings etc., everything that city of that time had. Most of it's walls were demolished in 1926. with only a small portion of the fortifications on both sides of Drava river. Tvrđa is one of the most important baroque complexes in Croatia, and South-East Europe.

The largest building in Tvrđa, and also the largest baroque building in Croatia is Palace of Slavonian General Command built between 1724 and 1726. The second floor was upgraded in 1765. Today is used by University rector administration and Department of cultural studies. This building can also be seen on Croatian currency called kuna

200 kuna:

On the square in front of General Command is Votive statue of the Holy Trinity
The statue was built since 1729 to 1730 in memory of a vow against plague, which was common in the 18th century in Slavonia. Making of the statue was funded by baroness Marija Ana Petraš, who was widow of hussar general, vice marshal Maksimilijan Petraš.
It is the largest baroque statue in Croatia.

Lets continue

The Main Guard Buidling - Osijek

The Main Guard building was built in the central part of the Holy Trinity Square. It was built in 1728 – 1729 as a single story building with multiple wings. The arcades on the ground floor open it towards the square, and a «thick» bell tower with a terrace rises in the center of the building facade. Its massive nature and a watchtower with a Moorish-Venetian style dome are evidence that it was used as a military building. The building was restored in 2007 and re purposed as the Archaeological Museum, which was attached to the Museum of Slavonia in 2012.
