Apparently the apporval by the Heritage Commission has been appealed to the Planning Tribunal. Not sure what the grounds of appeal are. So this project is likely to be stalled for quite a few months I suspect.

Proposal refused by Sulivans Cove Waterfront Authority - to be expected, I suppose. Heritage Nazis strike again.

Hopefully, the developer will appeal the refusal or better yet abandon it and simply proceed with his previous approval which was for a taller building. I would just to spite the anti progress clowns at the SCWA.

Article from the Hobart Mercury dated June 5 2011...

Quote:
PLANS to incorporate a historic Hobart pub into a 36-room boutique hotel may have to be scaled back.

Hope and Anchor owner Gunter Jaeger is in mediation with the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority over plans to build on a vacant block next to the hotel.

Mr Jaeger says the development is the only way to provide a viable future for the pub.

But plans to build a seven-storey building next to the Macquarie St pub were knocked back by the authority last year.

Negotiations have begun to reduce the size of the project.

"The authority and the applicant have been actively pursuing a way forward, including engagement with the authority's design panel," an authority spokeswoman said.

However, the developer has reserved a hearing date with the Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal at the start of next month, if negotiations have failed by then.

The authority wants the building to have a terraced look, with each level stepped back a greater distance from the street. The redesign will significantly reduce floor space and limit the number of rooms in the boutique hotel.

The Tasmanian Heritage Council conditionally approved the development application last year. An appeal of the council's ruling was lodged by the developer but withdrawn in February, pending the authority's decision.

The Hope and Anchor has been closed since 2005, but until then it held the title of the hotel operating under Australia's oldest licence - from July 1807.
Still, at least the project is not completely dead. I would be asking for an increase in height in return for stepping back each floor if I was Mr Jaeger

They should just wait till August when apparently the SCWA will be shutdown, then they can launch a new planning permit without the interference of the old fogies who have never been outside of Tasmania and associate the word progress with 'witchcraft' haha!

Perhaps however they don't automatically consider "progress"=good and conservation=bad.
