VILNIUS and Lithuania

Photos from the capital of Lithuania - Vilnius.

Vilnius University..

and its beautiful Observatory courtyard.

Pilies street.

Gedimino Avenue.

Vilnius St. Holy Trinity Greek Catholic Church, still heavily featuring Soviet period features but slowly being restored to its original state.

__

Vilnius street at night.

Vilnius Bernardine Church from which we will see wonderful views of the city's old-town.

Facing north-west toward the castle and the new city centre.
__

Towards the numerous churches on the south.

Even more churches towards the west starting with the red-brick rooftops of St. Anne's Church, St. Michael the Archangel across the street and the yellow façade and bell tower of Vilnius' St. John's church.
__

The belfry is currently under renovation after which visitors will be able to climb or take an elevator to the top for a panoramic view of the city. St. John's tower is the highest structure in the old-town at 68 meters.

Views from a recently built high-rise in the New City Centre, standing at 86 meters, view of the rooftop.

The panorama stretching from east to north in the next 3 pictures.

View toward the old city.

South facing, with the Europa tower (highest in Lithuania).

Structural features of the façade through which one can see the municipality building, Europa square at the bottom and 'Lietuva' hotel just further, now named Radisson Blu Lietuva.

The complex from street level.

Seems like Vilnius has quite a few panoramic spots, shame I did not know about them during my visit.

More photos please!

Great stuff. I like the pictures with all the brown church towers in them.

I was there last month and really, it's a beautiful and nice city, with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. A must visit.

Lovely pictures!

Now we move to the micro district of Lazdynai situated on the right bank of the Neris River. We start with an east facing view of the city with some landmarks visible in the distance. The green area in the middle with the white-roofed structure is Vingis park.

Gradually sweeping towards the south.

The difference between reconstructed and untouched Soviet high-rises is clearly visable here. The identical building from which the photos are taken has also been renovated.

Vilnius TV tower with the central square of Lazdynai on the left.

One more shot from the bank of the river.

Nice shots of a city with a very strong personality! Loved the red roof tiles, the great progress in restoring the old buildings, and the green environment!

Panoramic views from the district of Užupis situated on a hillside.

Still in Užupis, a view from the terrace of a popular restaurant.

The old-town panorama from the top floor of the shopping mall 'Gedimono 9'.

And finally an evening view of the Cathedral and its square form the steps of the bell-tower.

All for now!

Some more of Lithuania.

First of all, the so called pink soup, made with beetroot and sour-milk and served chilled with warm potatoes, actually tastes amazing and a must try!

Contemporary Art Centre building, great song and great exposition it turned out.

An even better initiative !

Some photos from the Curonian Spit, a 98km long thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The photos are mainly from the largest settlement there - Nida.

Ferries carrying cars, cyclists and pedestrians across the Curonian Lagoon.

The German cemetery in Nida.

A boat ride that takes you right up to the Kaliningrad border and back to Nida, a very pleasant and highly recommended attraction, especially in the evening when the sun is low.

Traditional ship that has sailed these waters back in the day.
