Crisis won’t keep Kadayawan
from being grand: Aportadera

The economic crisis will not keep the city government from making the upcoming Kadayawan celebration grand and memorable.

In an interview, city tourism operations officer Rizal Giovanni Aportadera said the expenses will be shouldered hand-in-hand with the private sector which committed to raise more than P14 million.

He said the latest update showed that a total of P6 million has already been raised.

Aportadera said the regular appropriation of the city government has always been P700,000 which will mostly go to the big events like the Indak-indak sa Kadalanan and the Floral Float Parade. He said the celebration has an over-all budget of P15 million.

Aportadera said despite the crunch, the Kadayawan finance committee has refused to grant exclusive sponsorships even if it would amount to millions of pesos.

He said this is because exclusive sponsorships have created chaos in previous celebrations.

He said telecommunications companies Globe and Smart have decided to agree on which particular events they will each be supporting.

Aportadera said there is a separate committee that will be monitoring the collaterals and ensure that the celebration will not become too commercialized. Overly commercialized concepts of the celebration prompted Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to make drastic changes two years ago.

Festival chair Ricky Vilar said cost-cutting measures will be imposed on some events and even in the committee level so that the prizes will not be affected.

He said the Davao River Festival, for example, will only have a non-motorized banca competition He said this will entice more people to join since it will not entail too much cost.

Vilar said expenses for decorations will be lessened by using indigenous materials.

“According to the ways and means committee, the prizes will not be lowered because this will serve as a come-on. The adjustments will be on the working committee,” he said.

The Indak-indak sa Kadalanan, which has the biggest budget in the festival, will give P300,000 as first prize in the Open Category and P100,000 each for the top-three winners in the Davao City-based Category.

A NUMBER of contingents from different parts of Mindanao has already signified to join this year’s Indak-indak sa Kadalanan competition which will make it grander than previous celebrations, the organizer of the event said yesterday.

She said in Maguindanao, the towns of Shariff Aguak, Parang Shariff Kabunsuan, Datu Tahir Ampatuan and Mamasapano have committed to join while Surallah and Lake Sebu in South Cotabato also vowed to send in their contingents.
She said there will also be delegations from Surigao del Norte, Barayong Magsaysay, Tagum City, Compostela Valley, Tacurong City, Mati City, Digos City, Sultan Kudarat and Kidapawan City.

Kadayawan 2008, a celebration of abundance »

s

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City — The Kadayawan Festival of Davao City this August will be a celebration of abundance.

Art Boncato, chair of the committee on publicity and media of the Kadayawan festivities this year during the Club 888 Forum of the Marco Polo Hotel on Wednesday stressed that as Davao celebrates its bounty there is a need to value the earth, the land, the natural resources and harvest.

He said it will be a grand celebration but will not commercialize the event saying that it is quite challenging but the tourism sector expresses interest in the Kadayawan Festival.

He explained that their objective is to bring in more guests and the event is open to everyone and to tourists both domestic and international.

The festival is a celebration for the Dabawenyos but holding it will not also block people people from other places to celebrate with us, he said.

According to Boncato, the tourism players especially the airline and hotel industries already made some offerings by reducing the rates and many already had availed of the zero ticket offered by airline companies.

He said the celebration is also to promote Davao City all over and direct flights are already open to other countries like HongKong and Singapore of which we have to take advantage of this.

“Many are looking at the market and still they do not know what to do about the access,” he said.

He said now that the access is offered to us then we have to support it.

Boncato also said that during the festivities, the airport will be among their concern where collaterals will be supplied at the terminals.

He further said that they plan to put up billboards in 13 airports nationwide in key cities of the Philippines about Kadayawan Festival where Mayor Rodrigo Duterte endorses the festivities and invite tourists to celebrate with the Dabawenyos in a city that is a must see destination of the country.
“The plans are being finalized and if they get the approval then the billboards will speak of Davao City and the Kadayawan Festival,” he said.

Media pledge support
for Kadayawan festival

BY MAYA M. PADILLO

In an effort to strengthen the hype for Kadayawan 2008 Festival, members of the media as well as information agencies in both local and national levels committed themselves to get involved in promoting the celebration.

The commitment was given during a consultation meeting initiated by Art Boncato of the Kadayawan Executive Committee at The Marco Polo, Davao yesterday.

Media representatives pledged to continue the support they have been giving to the festival for many years now by providing space and airtime for Kadayawan events.

According to Boncato, building up the publicity is one of the committee’s devices to ensure the success of the festivity.

This year’s festivity will features many innovations, including having two major festivals: the Indigenous Peoples Festival and the Contemporary Indigenous-Motivated celebration.

There will also be a new concept for the floral float parade competition, and this year’s celebration will feature Moda Mindanao which aims to promote fresh and new designers.

Also in the lineup are the launching of the first photo book in full color by the Davao Camera Club (DCC) and the first-ever walking tour in which locals and tourists will walk around the city visiting some of the festivity attractions, from Museo Dabawenyo to Osmeña Park to People’s Park.

A complete list of events and activities is available online at www.kadayawan.com.

Feature: Most competitive city hosts most competitive festival

by Romy Sabaldan

Davao City (18 July) -- Kadayawan the most competitive festival and Davao the most competitive city is the next celebrated "lethal combination" since Manny Pacquaio and David Diaz.

Fresh from a jubilant celebration last month from the sensational win of its most popular adopted Dabawenyo and new WBC Lightweight boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, Davao City goes on to celebrate one of its most festive celebrations barely a month from now.

This momentous month of August 2008 comes at a time after the city got another feather in its cap as the country's most competitive city this year, according to a study conducted by the prestigious Asian Institute of Management (AIM).

Davao City, again took the honors of being the most competitive city getting the highest marks in such domain as sea and air travel infrastructures and the low cost of doing business.

The comprehensive study accorded Davao City top spots in terms of its readiness as a major business and tourist destinations owning two major ports of entry, the Sasa seaport and the Davao International Airport.

Both international and national port of entries are easily accessible in a short travel time from the major commercial and trading hub of downtown Davao and the adjoining cities and provinces.

According to major business and tourism players in Davao and the adjoining regions, this is all about competition after all.

Competition in business statistics and services for all the participating cities to learn from the "Best Practices" of their neighbors, said Christine Omar of the Ateneo de Davao Center for business Research and Extension, official Academic Partner of the AIM comprehensive studies.

In another area of competition, Davao City is again host of this year's Kadayawan 2008 which had already sounded the invitation for participation and see for yourselves the greatness of the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan, Floral Float Parade, the equally colorful Fluvial Float Parade and a dozen other major attractions of the August 17 - 24, 2008 festivities.

Already, the 23rd Kadayawan Festival offers close to P1-M pesos in cash prizes this year for a total of 15 contingents from Davao City and 17 out-of-town participants from as far as the indigenous Parang and Sharif Aguak of Maguindanao and other provinces and cities vying for the coveted prizes in the street Indak-Indak (stomp-your-feet) colorful native dances. SM City to mark 50th year during Kadayawan Festival

SM CITY Davao is all set for a grand Kadayawan participation this August.

"We will have a greater participation as this year is also our 50th year anniversary, and it is our way of showing our appreciation for the support of Dabawenyos," Debby Go, mall manager of SM City Davao, said in Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao's Cafe Rysus.

SM City Davao is a diamond sponsor of the Kadayawan Festival.

Amid the present economic situation being experienced in the country, Go said they are still confident that the festival this year will be successful as SM City Davao brings in trade fairs, fashion shows, exhibits, and mall-wide sales.

For the whole month of August, according to John Maynard Gan, the new brand manager of Tuesday, July 22, 2008the mall has been fully booked with various events that will compliment the month-long festival. .

Kicking off the celebration will be the Agro-Industrial Trade Fair, which will be at the back portion of SM City Davao, together with an ikebana exhibit at the events center of the mall.

This will be followed by the Kaniyogan Festival, in coordination with the Philippine Coconut Authority, which will start on August 13.

The whole week of August 18 to 24 is the much-anticipated mall-wide sale.

During the same period, SM City Davao will also be providing their customers a glimpse of the festival by bringing in their own version of Indak-Indak within the mall compound.

PIA Press Release
2008/07/23

Kadayawan Festival a boon to business establishments

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (23 July) -- Many business establishments in Davao City are looking forward to the holding of Kadayawan Festival as an event that draws more traffic to the city thus renewing their support to the holding of the festivities.

During the Kapehan sa Dabaw held Monday at Café Rysus of SM City, Debby A. Go, mall manager of SM City Davao acknowledged that the Kadayawan really made the city atmosphere very festive and noticed that more provincial visitors and those from other neighboring areas timed their shopping during this kind of event.

Go said that they maintain their Diamond Sponsorship with the Kadayawan Festival and they support the Davao City government and private sector that runs the festival even as she said that they are also supporting programs and projects that benefits the people of Davao.

She said even if their traffic is heaviest during December, they consider other events in Davao City as equally important especially the Kadayawan Festival.

SM group brand manager Russel D. Alaba on the other hand said they are happy to report that SM Davao is among the top performers of the SM malls in the country and that the Davao City mall is doing well.

"We are bullish about the happenings in Davao," he said.

Go meanwhile said that they remain optimistic that they could meet their target despite the economic crunch and knowing that they are still into the first six months of operation although she said that their performance from January to June this year is higher compared to the same period in 2007.

Go said there is slow movement for items considered by shoppers as luxurious and remain strong on basic items and food making their Supermarket as a strong anchor. The RTWs also is performing well, she said.

With the entry of new malls in Davao City, Go said SM maintains and strengthens its affiliates even as she said that they will bring in stronger brands and stronger labels.

Alaba on the other hand said their efforts are focus in coming up with specific marketing plan that has global appeal just like in the Supermarket where they dedicated an area for Asian products because of the increase in the number of foreign shoppers like the Koreans.

Meanwhile, he said other than the lined up events for Kadayawan, SM Davao will run the Kadayawan Fashion Edge which is inspired by the recent season of fashion week at SMX where three Davao designers participated in the event highlighting their creation.

He vowed that they will make the Kadayawan Festival event at SM City Davao a notch higher as they will run a month-long activities in support for the August festival. (PIA) [top]
