Penalty regime in new Buenos Aires commuter operating agreements
12 Feb 2014

ARGENTINA: Minister of the Interior & Transport Florencio Randazzo announced on February 12 that he had approved new operating agreements for the Mitre, San Martín, Belgrano Sur and Roca commuter routes in Buenos Aires.

The emergency operating consortia UGOFE and UGOMS have been dissolved, with the Roggio group now responsible for the Mitre and San Martín networks and Emepa operating the Belgrano Sur and Roca routes.

Randazzo said that the private operators would henceforth be required to meet annual targets for criteria including service frequency, rolling stock maintenance, station cleaning and service quality, set by federal operating company SOFSE.

'A strict penalty regime' would apply if these targets were not met, with sanctions culminating in the cancellation of the operating agreement should failings in operations or rolling stock maintenance result in the lives of passengers or staff being placed at risk.

'We have been clear since day one', said Randazzo. 'Our only commitment is to the passengers, and we have put in place these new agreements which increase the presence and control of the state in order that a quality service may be provided'.

Buenos Aires has an extensive bus network, but it's a bit daunting for tourists who are unfamiliar with the area. Even with the guides they sell at news stands and at the Subte stations it still took me a few days to figure out how to use the system.

A map showing at least part of the network would help if they can't get all of the operators to work together. There is one available online, but due to the number of operators, you can only look at a few routes at a time.

At last, new modern metro stock for line A.

Last year, extension of line A, B & H occured, but extension of line E is very slow!

I heard, most bus routes are the replacement of former tram routes (closed in 1966). Is it true?

Paralyzing of line E and non-starting construction of line F, G & I is very sad.

First CSR EMU unveiled in Buenos Aires
27 Feb 2014

ARGENTINA: On February 26 Minister of the Interior & Transport Florencio Randazzo joined Transport Secretary Alejando Ramos and other dignitaries to inspect the first of 25 nine-car EMUs to be delivered for the Sarmiento commuter route in Buenos Aires.

Randazzo said that the new fleet would double capacity on the Sarmiento route, where an upgrading programme is due for completion by mid-July. From May to September this year CSR is also to deliver 90 EMU cars for the Mitre network where capacity would be tripled, according to Randazzo.

Deployment of the 160 coaches and 24 diesel locomotives that CSR is supplying for the San Martín route in Buenos Aires was now expected in around 90 days, following works to raise platforms to match the floor height of the new cars.
