Yeah I think the last time I got a proper look at the place was in winter as well. It did seem to be progressing fast back then. The few times I've been to North Shields since then I only got a peep at it from Bedford street and it look like nothing much had been done from that angle.

I'm sure someone asked about the progress of North Shields Metro Station but I'm blowed if I can find the thread, of course it could just have been a dream!

Anyway here are some photographs taken today, last time I took some was back in December 2011 and progress seems to be slow - http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...&postcount=177

North Shields Metro

That was me!
Probably on the Metro thread.

Don't like that roof line at all.
Looks like a 70's design.

A curved roof over both platforms should have been the minimum.

Betcha if it was London or an Olympic development then money would have been no object!

North Shields Metro Station - rebuild as at 19/06/12

Some pictures taken by myself 19/06/12 approx 1200 (hosted on Photobucket)

Looking east towards station from bridge across tracks

South and east elevations

Eastbound platform 2

Progressing - but seems slowly

Been through Shields Metro a couple of times now in the last few days. Can't say that I'm particularly keen on the blue bathroom tiles going up the stairs...

Is it just me; or does this look exactly the same design as the one they demolished?

Those white panels are just going to be a canvas for the locals who like to decorate any other clear surface throughout the rest of the town.

Hate to be negative, but just think the investment could have been put to better use.

This will be North Shields fourth station in 50 years. The original was damaged in the war and the station building was replaced with a bland sixties block around 1964, overlooking an increasingly decrepit station. Then in the early eighties this was replaced by a new unmanned standardised Metro station and now this is judged to be outmoded and is being rebuilt.

North Shields Metro Station - rebuild as at 31/07/12

Coincidence that there has been comment today on my pictures of 19/06/12, today was my first visit there since that date

Some further pictures taken by myself 31/07/12 approx 1100 (hosted on Photobucket) - unfortunately none of the blue tiles at east end of platforms

I agree, and they will also show the dirt as well.
The black tiles that were on the renders should have been used, yes it still would have been plain but they wouldn't have the ability to just draw on them and they won't show the dirt as the white ones will.

I agree though, it's basically the same station but on a larger footprint.

Underwhelmed. The old station worked well enough; I don't see the point of spending so much money for purely cosmetic reasons (delivering at best a marginally improved appearance).

Totally agree. What appears to be exactly the same layout (save for lifts instead of ramps) was it really worth, what, 7 million quid? North Shields isnt the sort of place you need to 'attract' people to use the Metro, it's used out of necessity. And would a few tiles and panels really attract people out of their cars?

Money could've been much better used elsewhere on the system imo.

Rather underwhelmed, but it's hardly Tynemouth station and not noted for being a tourist attraction so it will do for the next few decades.

Platform 3 is no longer signed although it remains in situ.

It's also interesting how the old parcels depot site is still undeveloped.

I wonder if Platform 3 will come into use if the Metro is extended from Percy Main to Northumberland Park.

Design wise I can't see why they had to rebuild it, whats has been done surely could have been done through a refit. It makes me wonder if the previous station was past it's life or near it in terms of structural integrity.

It's got a slightly larger foot print than the old station but it's look remarkably similar and only looks like it has had a facelift. I'm pretty sure the money could have been spent better.

Bit of a waste of money, all that was needed was some new lifts and some new tiling. Yet for some reason North Shields has had three new stations in 50 years.

Come the day

What happens to wheelchair users when the lifts break down - as they always do?

Depends on what platform. If platform 1, they'd be advised to travel to Whitley Bay and use the station footbridge, then return to North Shields. For platform 2, go to Meadow Well. There is no step-free access between platforms at Tynemouth or Cullercoats in the stations themselves, the nearest road bridges are quite a walk away.
