GCDA stadium for football
Quote:

A view of Ambedkar stadium in Kochi

The state on Wednesday decided to give the Ambedkar Stadium under the jurisdiction of Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) to the Kerala Football Association (KFA) to be used exclusively for football.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the sports minister, Mr KB Ganesh Kumar, and attended by officials of GCDA, legislators Hibi Eden and K. Babu and director of sports and youth affairs, Dr Amit Mallick, in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

GCDA has been advised to serve a letter to KFA about the procedures involved. If KFA agrees to the terms and conditions, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between them.

“Once the MoU is signed, KFA will be allowed to use the stadium for its activities. The venue will not be given for any non-sports purpose. The ownership will, however, remain with GCDA,” said the GCDA chairman, N. Venugopal.

Though the move has been welcomed by KFA, there are doubts being raised about certain clauses likely to be put in the MoU. This would include allowing the football body to use the venue for just 140 days a year.

“We will have to study what the restrictions are once they give the letter. If it is given for football it must be exclusively for football and that must be for 365 days.

So, nothing has yet been finalised,” said KFA secretary Anil Kumar. The association is planning to roll out a state-of-the-art football turf. FIFA has agreed to spend the amount for this.

The development, however, becomes highly relevant as India is bidding to host the Under-17 football World Cup and Kochi could be one of the lucky venues.

Capacity of 10000 is too less IMO if the plan is to make it an international venue.

Construction of a completely new pavilion might not be possible due to land constraints. Also funds will add to it. But 10,000 means at least 15,000 can be filled. Remember we had over 1 lakh crowd in the JNIS for the India-Iran match in 98.

I think 15,000 facility is fine for any sports. The other facilities should be standard class.

pathetic...they should plan a brand new international stadium with 45k-50k seating capacity. i don't think acquiring land will be a big deal as additionally it requires one or two acres which is possible in the vicinity. Honestly, if they really plan to show case this stadium for the mega event.

Everyone including GCDA, KFA would call for a 50k seater facility complying to international standard football grounds. But the real issue is capital for the project. KFA is neither KCA nor supported by GoK to build a completely new facility. This project itself is on the cards just because FIFA agreed to support the cause. A stadium built by GCDA with GoK funds, the JNIS, itself can't boast of hosting matches regularly. So don't except either of them to contribute for a new stadium in the near future.

Secondly, whats the need of a 50k seater stadium for Football... Any Football match held in Thiru-Kochi area, can attract maximum 2000 people..... We haven't seen any single match, in any recent times having a housefull audience for soccer......

Perhaps Malabar can attract more soccer fans, but that too will never cross beyond 10,000..... In India, only Goa and WB requires a 50k stadium, as there is sure demand..... In other states, the demand is very less for this game....

In future, if there is a demand, surely at that time, we can construct a new one..... For a brand new 50k, it requires huge capital and finally KFA will have to use the stadium for hosting award nites to realize the same.... It would be much better to have decent 10k Seater dedicated Soccer stadiums, so that the ground will be used only for football and promote it....

Strange..
Dear Friend, pls do not under estimate the people or rather soccer fans here. I was a spectator in many of the football matches conducted in JNIS.
People will come..spend money and watch quality football. But surely NOT for Chirag kerala's I -league or santhosh trophy. FYI, FC kochi was able to draw huge crowd and so as Nehru cup tournament...why because, FCK was a star studded team during its existence. IM vijayan, Joepaul, Bhutia, carlton, Raman Vijayan...can still attracts a decent crowd in Kochi.
In recent times, Kochi never hosted any quality soccer matches...I can't comment about Malabar's capability as I don't know any international tournaments hosted in Malabar.
we are talking in context of an international event. where, india's bidding to host the Under-17 football World Cup and Kochi could be one of the lucky venue.
Any event in that magnitude...it is not just Kochiites going to fill the stadium; who cares after that what happens
