Eleven days after the auctioneer brought down the hammer for the last time at players auction of IPL-4, there is finally a glimpse of hope for Prince of Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly who was earlier snubbed by all the ten franchisees.

According to the CNN-IBN sources, IPL Kochi has approached the IPL Governing Council to allow them to sign the former India captain Sourav Ganguly for IPL 4. Team Kochi will be making their IPL debut in this mega even which begins on April 8.

IPL Governing Council has shown their surprise by Kochi's late intent but it won't be that easy for them to go ahead and purchase Sourav Ganguly. They can do so only if the other nine franchises raise no objection to this out-of-auction deal.

Sources also told CNN-IBN that Governing Council is likely to bend its rules to approve Kochi request but seeing that Kochi is making their debut this season they can also give them green light to go ahead and buy their man if they get NOC from other teams.

If the Kochi deal works out, Sourav can look forward to joining forces with his old KKR mates Brendon McCullum, Brad Hodge and Owais Shah.

Kochi Tigers or Kerala Tigers was the officially agreed name as the team, which was to be announced in a grand way decided by the team management. But the team, as per reports is searching for a new name, as the coach Joeff Lawson disclosed it to their irony!!

Kochi IPL Team Will Be 'Kochi Emperors'

Kochi IPL team will be named ‘Kochi Emperors’, according to sources close to Kerala Cricket Association (KCA).

The sources have told Yentha, on condition of anonymity, that a leading Middle East airline will be the title sponsors of the team.

However, TC Mathew, secretary of KCA, has refused to confirm the information.

The other day Geoff Lawson, team’s coach, said that the Kochi team’s name would be ‘Kochi Tigers’. However, Vivek Venugopal, one of the owners of the team, has told the media that the name of the team will be decided only after two weeks. He has said suggestions from fans will also be considered. It is also reported today that the team is eyeing former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who didn’t have any takers in the recent auction.

The Kochi team, which has in its roster, S Sreesanth, Parthiv Patel, Brendon Mccullum, Muralitharan and RP Singh, is likely to be skippered by the Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardene.

IPL: Ganguly to be Kochi skipper?

New Delhi: It's just a matter of another 96 hours before Sourav Ganguly gets to know his fate in the IPL. The former India captain, who was snubbed by all franchisees at the 2011 auction in Bangalore seems to have got more than just a fighting chance of now getting back in.


CNN-IBN has learnt that the IPL Governing Council is meeting on Friday to decide his fate. CNN-IBN has got access to an email sent to all franchisees by IPL COO Sundar Raman that asks them to give their views on the idea of unsold players being now picked up by certain franchises

Ganguly could get IPL lifeline

Sourav Ganguly might find himself back on the field for the 2011 IPL after all, even though he failed to attract any bids from franchises during the auction on January 8 and 9. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the BCCI has sent a letter to the franchises asking if they have any objections to teams signing Indian players who were unsold in the auction.

The letter specifically mentions Ganguly as one of the players the franchises are interested in, along with Wasim Jaffer and VRV Singh. IPL rules presently do not permit unsold players to be signed after the auction.

The Kochi franchise is reported to have shown interest in signing Ganguly, and had apparently contacted the BCCI, leading to the sending of the letter. However, Mehul Shah, one of the co-owners of the franchise, told ESPNcricinfo that was not the case and they had not asked the board for permission to sign Ganguly.
