Seville Cathedral, the biggest gothic Cathedral in the world

The Cathedral of Seville is a religious building in Seville (Spain). It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world. In 1987 was declarated Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO.

The cathedral was built to demonstrate Seville's wealth, as it had become a major trading center in the years after the Reconquista. The builders of the cathedral decided in July 1401 to build a new temple, as the ancient Muslim mosque was in bad shape after the 1356 earthquake. According to the oral tradition of Seville, the decision of members of the chapter was: "Let a church so beautiful and so great that those who see it built will think we were mad". According to the minutes of that day, the new church should be: "a work such as good, which like no other."

Construction began in 1402, finishing in 1511. The interior has the longest nave in Spain. Its central nave rises to a height of 42 metres and is lavishly decorated, with a large quantity of gold evident. In the main body of the cathedral, only the great boxlike structure of the choir stands out, filling the central portion of the nave. It is also dominated by a vast Gothic retablo of carved scenes from the life of Christ. The altarpiece was the lifetime work of a single craftsman, Pierre Dancart. The cathedral has 80 chapels, in which 500 masses were said daily as reported in 1896.[5] The baptistery Chapel of Saint Anthony contains the painting of The Vision of St. Anthony (1656) by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.

For me the most interesting thing there is the courtyard of old mosque still standing there. Not the most usual feature in catedral.

Similar courtyard at Umayyad mosque:

What about the Giralda tower. Also a remnant of the mosque. The Giralda tower is one of the most amazing towers I have seen. It was built in an era when most of Europe was still coming out of the dark middle ages.

What makes the cathedral in Sevilla so amazing is the whole area around it of immense beauty which transports you back in time.

Giralda and Kutubiya

The Sevilla´s catheral tower is the sister of Kutubiya´s tower in Marrakesch. In the Renassaince the tower was increase with the bells floor.

The best and most beutiful towers with islamic influence are in my opinion the Aragon´s tower.

The Magdalena church in Zaragoza or San Pablo are a fantastic mudejar style towers.

World Heritage Site indeed, old Seville is a marvellous city fulll of magnificent architecture, one of my favourite places on earth. I just hope it never becomes as "touristy" as Barcelona, it's a few years since I last visited but I never forget that wonderful atmosphere!
