Hudson, Wisconsin

Thinking about nice small towns in the area that most people don't think much about, I thought Hudson, Wisconsin would be a good place to explore. Just over the St. Croix River from Lakeland, Minnesota, many people in the Twin Cities think of Hudson as nothing more than an ugly mass of suburban sprawl along I-94, but it's actually a great little place. Unfortunately I didn't get as many shots of the waterfront as I had hoped.

Seat of St. Croix County

It's got a nice little downtown which looks pretty busy and well maintained.

Yeah, it's a very nice little town – quite upscale and attractive. There seem to be a lot of thriving businesses in the community, and "daytripper" tourism makes up a significant portion of the town's economy. It's also a border town, so there's a concentration of wealthy Wisconsinites who live there and commute to the Twin Cities for work.

Quite a find.
Seems an incredibly attractive place.

Dig the yellow car in the first picture. ('57 Chevy?)

Nice pictures. What's the river water like? Clear or silty?

It's somewhat silty, but the water quality is much better than the Mississippi River, which is muddy and nasty. People can actually swim in the St. Croix.

That being said, I don't believe there are any rivers in Minnesota or Wisconsin that are crystal clear, save for some smaller rivers that flow into Lake Superior or in the Boundary Waters near the Canadian border.

Haha, yeah, that would definitely be considered fishing in style.

It's a cruise boat that takes passengers up or down the lower St. Croix. It's a very scenic area – I definitely want to take a ride sometime!

Glad you got a picture of Dick's Bar. Though all you can see is the sign while taking the picture of the river with the sign saying Hudson Wisc in front of the river. If you had been there about a month ago you could have gotten pictures of life sized replicas of the Nina and the Pinta.

Actually, I did get another side view of Dick's Bar – these friendly folks were standing outside for a smoke when I walked by:

Great pics! I was actually born in Hudson, my parents lived there and worked in St. Paul. So I'm connected in a way.

I like Hudson, it is a pretty town and it's liquor stores are open on Sundays. I've always thought it would be funny if they got light rail before Milwaukee. It could happen.
