True that design may be more beautiful, but with height of 300 maybe 400m that would bring no attention to the city and the country. There is so many tall towers build this days around the world and even if you build the tallest it can be surpassed in a matter of years. I think they have chosen great because the design is absolutely unique and is instantly recognizable, even if there are countless taller towers in the world. I'm glad this project is still moving forward

dont be a size queen. size isnt everything. look at the empire state building and the eiffel tower. both midget buildings in today's world of supertalls. but still very significant and beautiful buildings that are still valuable and differentiates those cities from other cities.

What's its current status? Is it gonna become like the Gate of Taipei with delays all the way until the next century?

Sorry all words are written in Mandarin

Basically, the environmental assessment has started in 4th of May. The height of this tower is 314m regard to taiwan-city forum. But I cannot find source for it.
The project is moving forward. Taichung city government has passed budget for this tower. Currently, they are doing environmental impact assessment and detail design for construction.

Well, I can tell you right now the design isn't the best design ever. However, it's unique and is going to be a landmark. Taiwan definitely needs more supertalls, especially after Taipei 101 because such a success.

As long as the design isn't a monstrosity, I hope it gets built.

Design has been re-adjusted
New design is taller and slimmer.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Currently under construction, the Taiwan Tower may bring Taichung tens of billions of New Taiwan dollars after its completion, said Taichung Mayor Jason Hu (胡志強) yesterday.

An estimated NT$6 billion is required to build this landmark of the Shuinan Economic and Trade Park; Hu had staunchly defended the construction project some three years ago when many voiced skepticism over the park's economic benefits.

Not only would the project boost Taichung's tourism, it would also make a chip in government debt, said Hu.

Taichung's Urban Development Bureau (UDB) Director Mu Gui-xing (沐桂新) delivered a report on the tower's construction progress yesterday, pointing out that the tower's retaining columns are expected to be finished by the end of 2014 while the construction of the main building is slated for January 2015. The 313.9-meter-high tower will include a museum, restaurants and a number of stores to attract visitors, said Mu.

The UDB has estimated that the tower will draw roughly 56.5 million visitors each year, a number that will in turn bring commercial opportunities of NT$10 billion for the surrounding businesses.

Three searchlights will be projected into the sky before the construction is finished and represent the hope that the tower will bring, said Mu.

According to Mu, the tower will be operated by an “Operation Transfer (OT)” model, meaning that the city may be receiving as much as NT$100 million in royalties and taxes. Also, the contractor company could earn back its investment on the project within eight years.

A Ministry of Finance report showed that the Taichung government had debts amounting to NT$49.8 billion by the end of last year.

The Shuinan Economic and Trade Park is an important indicator of Taichung's future and the returns from various related developments will be several times the investments, Hu had claimed previously when defending the project. The mayor also said the project is the city's most important in 400 years. The tower is being built in an environmental design inspired by the shape of the banyan tree and will be an “oasis” of the city.

The new one looks short and it's so empty. Will it stand in a typhoon?

No, they intentionally build it so it will topple over at the first gust of wind.

Some people...

A 21st century version of the Eiffel tower, but without the shear elegance and quality of that monument.

That's a really odd comparison.

hmmm... the location of the tower, will it really attract that many tourists? in Paris, the city is designed around the Eiffel Tower, but this will be different. I don't think it will be as attractive as Eiffel Tower

i think maybe it wouldve been cooler if they had cut the shape of taiwan on the sides of the tower instead of on the roof. it can be seen from far away and can look very nice illuminated at night. man sometimes i wish i had pursued my original career goal of architecture!!
