According to P.Saravanan, municipal commissioner, the new bus stand would have more bays and facilities. The old bus stand, which is a ‘C’ class type, is located in two acres of land opposite to the railway station in the town.

Tiruvarur town would soon get a new bus stand. This would come up in 11.08 acres at Thyagaperumanallur on Thanjavur-Tiruvarur national highway near the collectorate.

The land costs Rs 1.9 crore . R.Kamaraj, Food Minister, visited the site on Sunday and directed municipality officials to call for tenders. Collector S.Natarajan accompanied the Minister.

According to P.Saravanan, municipal commissioner, the new bus stand would have more bays and facilities. The old bus stand, which is a ‘C’ class type, is located in two acres of land opposite to the railway station in the town. It has 23 bays and presents a congested look.

The new bus stand would have 35 bays and would be a ‘B’ class type. The new bus stand has space for further expansion. Besides, the bus stand would have toilets, drinking water facilities, auto sheds, and restaurant. The new bus stand would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 6 crore.

Approval of Directorate of Town and Country Planning has been received and structural design would be approved by National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi (NIT-T), said Mr. Saravanan.

Nearly 200 buses are being operated from and to Tiruvarur of which 25 are town buses. This apart, 10 buses to Chennai are going via Tiruvarur from Vedaranyam and Thiruthuraipoondi. While these buses are operated by Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, buses going to places such as Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram and Marthandam are operated by Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation.

Fifteen such buses ply via Tiruvarur. Most of the buses operated by State Transport Corporation via Tiruvarur are from Tiruchi to Velankanni.

chemplast PVC Cuddalore plant to expand

The Cuddalore facility will be expanded to three lakh tonnes a year capacity soon, but this is more a ‘debottlenecking’ exercise and only requires marginal investment.

The plantation, being carried out along the banks of various Public Works Department (PWD) canals, were originally meant to control overflow of water at times of floods.

Forest Department has earmarked 200 hectares in the district to be brought under teak plantation in 2012, raising the total land covered by the project to 1,600 hectares.
The plantation, being carried out along the banks of various Public Works Department (PWD) canals, were originally meant to control overflow of water at times of floods, according to I.Anwardeen, District Forest Officer, Tiruchi.
Apart from their flood controlling effect, teakwood fetches consistently good returns making them a popular option for the department’s social forestry and general afforestation projects. “Though teakwood matures over a period of 30 years, it requires only three years of care,” said Mr. Anwardeen.
In 2011 alone, teak saplings were planted in nearly 600 hectares along the banks of the Uyyakondan canal, Kattalaimettu canal and Pullampadi canal in the district, according to A.Sekar, Forest Range Officer. “While teak saplings planted in farmland and irrigated for more than three years tend to yield 0.5 to 1 cubic metre of wood, those planted on canal banks yield an average 0.38 cubic metre of wood,” he said. The type of soil at the canal banks also affected the growth and yield: “While the teak planted in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam district have a better yield owing to the silt-rich soil on the canal banks there, the teak in Tiruchi has to grow on the hard, gravelly soil found on canal banks here,” he said.
The teak seedlings are raised at a nursery during the first year (raising year), then transplanted onto the cleared land along the canal banks and maintained for the next two years, according to Mr.Anwardeen, who added that the plantation work is carried out by nearly 120 labourers at a cost of Rs.15, 035. Once the teak has matured, the trees are cut and auctioned in lots. “In terms of value, one cubic metre of teakwood, used to make window and door frames, costs Rs.30,000, while the one foot slabs used to make doors and tabletops costs Rs.60,000.”
The department appoints two watchers for every 10 hectares to protect the teak from grazing cattle and humans.
“Teak is one of the four scheduled timbres and unauthorised felling of teak trees is a non-bailable offence that attracts up to five years of imprisonment and a fine up to Rs.20, 000,” said Mr. Anwardeen.

Organisations against exploitation of sand wealth from the Cauvery River have opposed Tamil Nadu government's contention that it did not require obtaining clearance from the Environment Ministry and Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) committee to quarry sand in the State.

A batch of PILs to ban sand quarrying in the river beds of Cauvery and Kollidam in Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur had been filed in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High court.

The State government advocates submitted that the quarries were owned by the State government and were leased out to quarry operators. Under such circumstances, it was not mandatory for the State to obtain clearance and permission to grant the license for the quarry operators, they said.

Crude oil discovered in Tamil Nadu

Quote:
State-owned Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has made a crude oil discovery in an exploration block in Tamil Nadu, the company's junior partner Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) said on Tuesday.

Exploratory well 'Madanam-3' produced 115 cubic meters per day of oil and 11,500 cubic meters per day of gas in Cauvery basin block, BPCL said in a filing to the stock exchanges.

ONGC is the operator of the block CY-ONN-2002/2 with 60 per cent interest while Bharat Petro Resources Ltd (BPRL), a fully owned subsidiary of BPCL, holds the remaining 40 per cent. The two had won the block in the fourth round of bidding under New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP).

The discovery well is situated 14-km south-east of Chidambaram town in Tamil Nadu.

"Compared to earlier lower-productivity basement discoveries, Madanam-3 discovery is a major breakthrough in basement play exploration in Cauvery basin," the company said.

Velankanni hotels cautioned against fleecing pilgrims

Quote:
An administrative fiat has been issued to lodges and hotels forbidding them from fleecing pilgrims during the festival of Velankanni here. This comes in the wake of complaints that lodges and hotels have shot up their charges owing to high demand for dorms, and boarding spaces in the town.

Inspecting the security and transport arrangements here on Saturday evening, Collector T.Munusamy said that the administration on receipt of complaints of malpractices by lodges and hotels, would act upon them. Also, food inspectors were mandated to verify the food quality in lodges besides other eateries.

Vehicular movement would be strictly regulated with vehicles forbidden entry at the Velankanni arch. Further, parking would be permitted only along designated parking spaces. According to a release, such parking areas would soon be designated by the Regional Transport Office, Transport Corporation and police administration.

The passenger strength of vehicles would also be streamlined to curb overcrowding and accidents. Further, a slew of additional transport services would be put in place for the pilgrims till the completion of the 10-day long festivities.

Inspecting the safety standards and procedures, Collector T.Munusamy stated that six fire service wagons and two ambulances would be placed in designated spots, with 175 personnel stationed for emergencies.

Further, a round-the-clock rescue and relief team of 20 persons are proposed to be stationed along the beach. A permanent warning plague would be set up, indicating no-swimming zone, on the beach.

As announced earlier, Velankanni town has been announced as a no-plastic zone, and women’s SHGs were roped in to meet the demand for paper bags, cups and plates. The security apparatus proposed a 1,100 strong police force in the town and surveillance cameras in 50 locations.

Pictures of history-sheeters including those of pocket pickers would be pasted in prominent places to enable pilgrims to be on guard. Further, police pickets would be set up to monitor suspicious movements.

Additional sanitation workers would be put in place by the Town Panchayat for the railway station in view of additional trains proposed for the festival and absence of proportionate number of railway sanitation workers.

TVR is getting new bus stand. What happended to Mayiladuthurai new bus stand proposal. In olden days of composite TNJ Dt., MV was the 4th largest town in TNJ Dist. after TNJ,KMU,Nagai. Bifurcation of TNJ and again bifurcation of Nagai has affected the growth of once thriving town. Even sirkali is having better bus stand that Mayiladuthurai. Lot depends on the MLA's of the Town. TVR was due to MK, TNJ due to World Tamil Conference, KMU due to Ko.Si.Mani. In particular the contribution to KMU by Ko.Si.Mani to KMU is laudable.

So much is promised in CDL area. But Politically volatile area due to certain self centered parties. A mega power plant was kept under cold due to political interference during last government's rule.
