China

Quote:
Hainan Island is connected to the Chinese mainland by a train ferry opened in 2007. A new service operates from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou (Canton) to the beautiful tropical beach resort of Sanya. Here is the new Sanya - Beijing service being propelled onto the train ferry by DF4DD 1028 and DF4DD 1027 (both not on video).

There was a service between Sardinia (Olbia-Golfo Aranci) and Mainland Italy (Civitavecchia, near Rome) for freight trains, but this ahs been killed. Now rail ferries run there (or between Sardinia and Villa San Giovanni in the Strait of Sicily) only when passenger stock has to be transfered (empty) to workshops.

The Central Gulf Railroad operates a service that transports rail cars between the US and Mexico, connecting the Port of Mobile in Mobile, Alabama and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico. It is served by the Burlington Northern Railroad, Canadian National Railway, CSX Transportation, Kansas City Southern Railway, and the Norfolk Southern Railway.

The Alaska Railroad also has a RORO train service between Seattle and Whittier, Alaska thru the Alaska Rail Marine service along with a service to Prince Rupert, British Columbia thru the CN's Aqua Train. The Alaska Railroad is connected to the rest of the North American rail system only via train ferries.

A better view.

The train is breakable. But ICE is'nt. The ICE is a 5 car ? The Ro/Ro Rail ferry doesn't seems very long.

In Italy they use loco-hauled trains, that is, with separate coaches. Each track can usually carry around 4 coaches. Train has to be split before tacking the ferry and recomposed again after the crossing.

On the Hamburg-Copenaghen service (post #3) short DMU are in use, so they can board the ferry themselves without having to be manoeuvred and splitted. These ferries can carry a 4-car ICE-TD or a 6-car IC3 (two 3-car trains), but IC3 cars are much shorter thant ICE-TD ones.

New York New Jersey Rail, LLC operates a rail barge between Jersey City and Brooklyn, New York. Since freight trains are not allowed to use the Pennsylvania Railroad Tunnel under the Hudson River this is the only way they can get across New York Harbor. This service is used by CSX and Norfolk Southern.

Is a RoRo/Rail longer thant 200m ?

I seek an I find only 190m maximum. I'm talking about ferries able to cross sea with waves not about barge.

190,8m

I've been on that ferry, and while it was quite interesting I really don't see the point of ferrying passenger trains across.
Once we were on board the ferry everyone left the train and went on deck of the ferry anyway, so having a system where you just coordinate train and ferry services (as has existed across the English channel for decades) and have passengers transfer would work as well, and would probably even be faster.

Some passengers (elderly people) may find difficult to transfer their luggage two times, and most trains are sleeper trains (even if some of them make the traverse during the day, like the EXP 1931/1933/1935 Venezia 19.09-Siracusa 1.355 that is shipped between 9.30 and 11.00).

There are only two pairs of day trains in service today, both made with conventional stock, which after the crossing is divided in two parts (one for Palermo, one for Siracusa).

IC 723 Roma 7.27-Palermo 19.24
IC 727/729 Roma 11.27-Palermo 23.00/Siracusa 22.30

IC 722/728 Palermo 7.08/Siracusa 8.00-Roma 18.33
IC 724/730 Palermo 10.07/Siracusa 10.07-Roma 21.33

Total travel time is 11 hours 25 minutes, and the crossing takes about 2 hours: one of the trains arrive in Messina at 10.20, and leaves Villa San Giovanni on the continent at 12.10.

Some decades ago there was a maybe faster service made with EMU, that were shunted onto the ships by diesel locomotives.

Indeed it's a 4 coaches.

It's a diesel ICE. Is it possible for a EMU to go on and go off ferry without contact between pantograph contract catener ? For example, install battery only for 300m. An other solution is to push EMU for enterring ferry and to tract it for going off with a diesel or bimode loco.

Quote:
The sleeper train to Berlin, consisting of 3 swedish cars is shunted onboard the ferry in Trelleborg.
