Downtown São Paulo: huge car-free zone

Despite São Paulo's notorious traffic problems, the historic center of the city is a model for pedestrian-only urban development.

All photos taken by me.

Thanks everybody! I agree, the historic center of São Paulo is one of the most interesting parts of the city, mostly because of the architecture of the older buildings. Here are a few more from the same general area.

Municipal Theater:

In front of the theater:

Anhangabaú Valley (formerly a river, now an underground freeway with a park on top).

More photos of the pedestrian streets:

Sé Plaza:

Municipal Cathedral (still in Sé Plaza):

The cathedral behind the entrance to the Sé Metro station:

I did not know of this zone before. A more people frendly area, nice... I read in the news about the the new wave of violence in SP, is this area affected?

I love this city!! Sad that when people talk about São Paulo, they just remember about the traffic jams and helicopters.

Looking very nice. In amongst the ugly mass of skyscrapers that comprises much of Sao Paulo, there are many delightful spots such as this.

Interesting downtown. It looks as if the buildings from city center, are just a bunch of small buildings in the middle of a Botanical Garden (I mean Anhangabaú Valley)

@mcolley
Where is the former river from Anhangabaú Valley? it was a small creek or something like that? I suppose it were a tributary of another river. Where was it mouth?
