Just the roof.

It's gonna be demolished to allow a new one to be built.

All in all, only the stadium's superstructure (the "7-like" arches) will remain of the original bowl.

But the price will be confirmed in may 17th when the new roof project will be revealed.

wide single tier.... 76000+ seats, why didn't they configure for 90000+ Brazilian in that all-seater stadium?
That's Disgusting to reduce it!!!

I wish the 2nd tier should remained oval, but steeper. 1st tier should be more rectangular (for example like in Cape Town Stadium) of course the pitch lowered a lot. Between them a small tier of skyboxes.
I made a quick model of my idea:

1st tier ~35000, 2nd ~60000 total: 95000

Tiers in Maracana's new seating bowl are gonna be a lot smaller because of the new luxury boxes to be added between them.

Original Maracana is done for.

How about this for a new seating bowl? A ring of luxury boxes between the two tiers, and a second level of luxury boxes at the west and east sidelines.

New transparent roof covering the entire seating area instead of just the upper tier... impressive.

And the new seating bowl had to be designed that way because of the Mario Filho's short height (24 m)? And I always thought that the straightened-out east-west stands looked so un-Maracana to me. Won't look that way in the real-life finished product, though. So is this project good to go for December 2012?

And will the Maracana have only one tier after reconstruction?

With the money of the reconstruction a new one could have been done. And it was done, but with low capacity: the Engenhão.

The Engenhão was made for the 2007 Pan American Games.
He will be the Olympic stadium in 2016.
To this will be modernized and its capacity will be expanded.
How is an olympic stadium is not the best option for a World Cup.
Moreover, the Maracana has a great history and the Final World Cup could not be elsewhere.

As the value ..
It really is too high and could have built a new stadium with a much bolder design.
However, the Maracana stadium is a tumbled, and to demolish it would face several legal factors.
