I'd be interested to find out (seriously) how many students were killed by someone doing between 40-60 before the 40 zones were introduced and compare it to how many were killed subsequently.

As another example there are people that are a LOT more dangerous at the speed limit than others exceeding the limit. Something to ponder.

If you want to understand the other side of the argument you need to think beyond the obvious of a higher speed object will impact at a higher speed. If we all drove at 5kph there'll be a less speed related fatalities.

agree with you, but why travel at 70km when tha speed sign is clearly at 60km... if i kept up with cars to travel in tha pack, everyone is doing well above 60km... i just don't understand that??? what's happened in perth, i don't remember it being this bad... i seem to be tha odd one out...

Kelli, there is much research to show that in areas where speed cameras were removed after being banned. Have a quick search, if you doubt this.

Assume for a minute that is the case. When you combine the lack of evidence of saving any lives, with tactics such as placing speed cameras in areas that don't see a high level of fatalties, but do see a high level of traffic, it is easy to see that these devices are simply revenue raisers.

As for road fatalities : yes, it's bad. I don't think that any government department is smart enough to solve it. It requires lateral thinking, long term planning, genuinely putting people first, and coopertation with other departments. Something the government is not capable of.

As for speed limits : again, I don't think governments are clever enough to determine the correct speed limits for maximum safety.

Crave, Kelli, etc - buy your logic, all speed limits should be set as slow as possible. Your stance isn't making a lot of sense.

If the speed limits were reduced to 20kph - would you abide by them? Logically, it's a safer speed than anything higher than that?

It would save lives.

Do you have any reason why speed limits should not be 20kph?

slight uninformed view here... vehicles in this country meet australian design rules (adr)... and govt bodies do meet to share and collaborate on road safety... there has been a collective approach by state and federal govts to introduce various measures to make car travel safer... it's not one thing that saves lives, and there's no guarantee any measure saves a life... tha aim is to minimise harm... move yourself from tha throw away lines that are used, that measures saves lives... no can stop any death on tha road govt or otherwise, however, govt initiatives means your chance of surviving a crash is far greater than it ever has been in motor vehicle use...

my logic is not to set speed limits as low as possible... tha vast majority of our roads are designed to enable comfortable 60-70km speeds... don't think i want tha speed limits reduced...

all things aside, i simply want to understand why people travel at 70km and above when tha road limit is clearly 60km... now if tha answer is becos you freaking want to, then fine... suck it up and pay tha fine if you get caught! don't harp on about your being nanny'd by tha state... that's rubbish.

i remember reading it costs $18billion to govts nationally for road accidents/crashes...

Also - I haven't had a speeding fine for a loooooooong time - 10, 15 years? I honestly can't remember - I think I've only had one my whole life.

Technological advancements in areas such as air-bags, abs breaks, traction control, crumple zones, etc etc have had a million times more impact on safety and saving lives that anything the australian government has come up with! I know a way we can reduce all road fatalities to zero. Ban cars from the road. I can prove 100% that this will work. Does it mean that we should do it?

I don't think anybody claimed that it was the most polarising issue in society. You are avoiding answering my line of argument and trying to move the discussion back to a point which has long been passed.

FYI I very, very rarely speed at all, have never sped excessively, and I've never had a speeding ticket.

robby at tun po - fucking rockstar. really really good food in a 50-80m long restaurant with wet floors, a singing and dancing owner who is sculling beers with patrons and singing. he also insisted on buying us beers, sat down and ate some of our food at one stage and then did michael jackson impersonations while singing off key. the most charming chinaman ive ever met, i wouldve put out and im not even that way inclined.

acc you really have to go, go late though when he has more time to have a chat and is half pissed cos thats when the fun starts. we had people singing with strangers, walking around and sitting down at different tables for a chat etc. very cool. tell him youre friends with sunny/sanjy (he struggledf with my name) and david from australia who came in recenly.

umm... make sure you eat a papaya salad.... make sure you have some pork noodle soup from a street vendor...

Def check out Chinatown, it's quite different to the rest of the city, the small little laneways are pretty amazing...

...check out some property for me...

Chatuchak (spelling) markets are pretty intense, worth a look around if you have a spare weekend day...(don't think it's a food market, but it might be - it's so big I didn't see anywhere near all of it, after 3 visits)

You'll see within a few days, it doesn't matter whether you plan much or not, there's good shit everywhere.

If you want to do any shopping, check out the Siam Center/Siam Discovery Center, MBK Center, Siam Paragon corner.

Check out Sirocco and Sky Bar the world's tallest rooftop bar/restaurant - amazing views...

Other tips:

It can be close to impossible to negotiate a fair tuk tuk price.

Taxi's, if they use the meter, are cheap.

Skytrain is by far the best way to get around.

Use your contacts, and eat.
