NCT's Shanghai series - Nanjing Road (NEW photos from Post 26!)

Nanjing Road is Shanghai's No.1 shopping street. It starts near Jing'an Temple in the West and the Bund in the East.

Jing'an Temple's history can be traced back to 760 years ago. It's undergone several rebuildings and restorations. It's now a listed building and serves as a major tourist attraction.

Today Jing'an Temple refers not just to the temple itself, but the surrounding area. The place has developed into a centre for shopping, leisure and business.

Jiuguang Department Store in the background:

Today the temple is surrounded by rather many shiny skyscrapers.

To the temple's southwest is the newly built Wheelock Square ...

... which does look rather elegant behind the trees of Jing'an Park (south of the Temple just across Nanjing Road)

Entrance to Wheelock Square on Yan'an Road (parallel to Nanjing Road just to its south):

This is its side on Nanjing Road though - grim and faceless:

The western section of Nanjing Road West is dominated by high-rise office towers. A slight shame that the ground level isn't always 'friendly'.

Edging closer to my old home. I remember as a child strolling along this section of Nanjing Road with my family in the evenings. Although there isn't much 'streetlife' here in the traditional sense, the feeling isn't exactly 'dead' either, but rather one of tranquility.

Shanghai Manderin:

A route 20 trolley-bus outside Shanghai Centre (The Ritz Carlton occupies part of the complex, along with high-end apartments and offices):

It's just struck me how dense the trees along the roads are:

Looking back towards the West from the intersection with Shaanxi Road:

Plaza 66 - crap camera cannot get the entire tower in:

Ground level of Plaza 66:

Am I asking too much, or should it offer Nanjing road an elevation something wee bit better than this?

This is where the shopping actually starts. Some street interaction from Citic Square:

The southern side of Nanjing Road here is lined with small shop fronts occupying the ground floor of old terraced houses.

Tenants of these units have changed beyond recognition. The post office, pharmacy and food outlets have all gave way to high-end stores.

Some hasty shots of the place I lived for 12 years as a child:

These were built in the 1930s. At the time they were of the better quality among housing stocks. They've done well to survive this long, and are still regarded as being fairly prestigious, though compared to modern standards spacing between buildings isn't exactly great.

They've recently given the exterior a face-lift, presumably for the Expo:

Having walked for about 200 yards I can finally get the taller tower of Plaza 66 in shot!

Looking north into Jiangning Road:

Citic Square tower from Maoming Road:

Taking a little detour through Wujiang Road. This road used to be a street market (maaaany years ago). While things are definitely much cleaner, I can't help but feel a certain urban realm has gone.

Coming out through Taixin Road back onto Nanjing Road. Shanghai has quite a few of these 30s apartments:

Became a little tired after one and a half hours' walking, so decided to take the 20 for two stops, to People's Park.

The Grand Theatre

What used to be Shanghai's tallest building - the Park Hotel. Shanghai locals used to mock tourists taking photos of it.

A fine collection of old and new buildings. This section could offer so much if pedestrianised instead of used as a street-level car park currently.

Huanghe Road - doesn't look it, but it's full of big restaurants.

Here's the highway designers' ingenuity at work. Have to jump across a lane to legitimately cross the road.

Have to jump over some no man's land to cross the road then?

Saw this very informative map inside People's Square Metro Station - gives an idea how full of life this part of Shanghai is.

Had some lunch at Raffle's city, and thought this was a rather good skyline when I came out.

Then I took a 584 to Shanghai Railway Station ...

More photos, from an earlier batch.

This is the western end of Nanjing Road East pedestrian street. Bit of a shame you can't cross it directly from the Western side - you have no choice but to use a foot tunnel underneath Tibet Road Central. No doubt alec74 and particlez will go to the wall to defend this.

I guess the underground experience isn't too bad - not the kind of dark dingy dangerous feeling you get from UK foot tunnels.

Looking back across the road - Park Hotel and Tomorrow Square among other buildings.

Turn to the East again ...

Entrance to the newly built Shopping Centre on the Southeast corner of Nanjing Road / Tibet Road - good to have some street-level interaction.

Sight-seeing bus - only for the lazy Waidiren J/K

A little back street heading north - the brown building on the left is Shanghai's First Department Store.

The sky directly above me was pretty cloudly, so the Sunshine being let through was rather limited.

A side street / alleyway

Spotted this gem further in - now housing a vocational college.

Behind this is a scene of relative poverty.
