Back onto Nanjing Road East. This short section of about 400 metres, between Tibet Road and Zhejiang Road, is home to quite a few grand colonial buildings. First Department Store was one, and now there's First Food Store -

On the other side of the road you have coffee bars with outside seating. Last time I was back in Shanghai (2008) I saw Burger King there for the first time (in Xujiahui). This time it was Subway and Costa Coffee galore ... There's no there there anymore ...

Towards the west again ...

Train ... Seriously you don't truly appreciate the magic Nanjing Road if you don't actually walk it you lazy tourists. All you do is giving these wretched gimmick schemes an excuse to exist and be a bloody pest for us people actually walking it properly - and train toots as well - SHUT UP! The whole stretch of the road isn't even a mile long, if you don't want to walk, or are in a hurry - take the bus on Jiujiang Road which is 1 minute away grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Anyway ... Shanghai Fashion Store

The upper levels are the Eastern Hotel

Across the road is the Wing On Department Store - the only one of the old Big 4 to have its old name back (the other 3 are now the aforementioned First Department Store, First Food Store and Fashion Store).

Some spactacular examples of European architecture. Wouldn't look out of place in Paris.

Excuse the thread bump, but the observant would have realised that Nanjing Road has yet not been covered in its entirety in this thread. After taking these pictures of the bund on a hot sunny morning, I made my way towards Nanjing Road East again.

First off, I wasn't going to miss the exciting restoration projects going on at the Bund Source, where Suzhou Creek joins the Huangpu River.

This area is to be occupied by high-end shops, bars and restaurants with outside seating. However words are that this area has stayed largely static since the summer - could perhaps those in Shanghai update us on that? Thanks!

There's nothing like a bit of authentic brick-work ...

Just imagine how brilliant this street will be once finished!

Some buildings inevitably cannot escape this fate ...

... while others are brilliantly restored!

Though in the heart of the city, this area does give a sense of 'underdeveloped' ...

The building site is for some commercial development associated with the wider Bund Source Project, but activities have been fairly slow.

Junction of Beijing Road East / Sichuan Road Central

This end of the road (Henan Road to the Bund) is not pedestrianised and the kind of retail is somewhat lower-end. Some of the buildings are residential in nature.

Plaza 353, opened in 2007 in its current form.

This is how all shopping centres ought to be - plenty of stores opening directly onto the streets
