Designs by THRYVE
In this thread I will be constantly posting new designs-- some with more detail than others. I welcome and look forward to comments, suggestions, etc., but please keep in mind that some of my design are basic sketches or ideas which I have posted even though they are not completed design concepts.
Note: All material is my own and should not be reproduced or used elsewhere without my permission. |

Thanks
I still have to learn how to use rendering programs. But I look forward to it.

#4 - In Progress - Nurses' Residence
Buildings in background are past designs (see above posts). This is a complex consisting of one highrise and one midrise, both connected by one lowrise podium. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by thryve; September 26th, 2010 at 08:17 PM. |

Okay, fixed the scaling of the bike racks, hehe. Of course, the design is still far from completion.

I like the design work here, very modern and I like how the buildings are integrated into the grading of the site. I couldn't help but notice the Conestoga College building, is that where you attend school? I think it would be unique to see your ideas and concepts for downtown Kitchener/Waterloo. I've been hearing that office space is at a premium in the area, and be cool seeing some concepts of a business district with a few office towers and some mixed use office/commercial/residential.
Keep up the good work! |

Thanks Jeremy!
I actually attend University of Toronto. I am from Waterloo originally, so that explain my tendency toward designing for KW. I slapped the Conestoga College on that one project, but it could be used by any school in the area or community centre/library. If you ever go to www.wonderfulwaterloo.com you'll see my designs for Kitchener Waterloo in a section called "My Design Showcase." _________________________________________________________________________________ In this thread, I'm thinking of adding small design synopses for each design I post, to give some context and explain it. However, I don't want to overload the thread with information that isn't interesting to other people. So in the meantime, if any project catches your eye and you want to know more about it, just ask me!

#6 - In Progress - THE CAPITOL
A residential condominium tower with townhouses at ground level. It will be sheathed in a modern, transparent glass skin with open-able windows, but will use more natural materials such as concrete, wood, and stone, at ground level and on the townhouse podium. Update: This is my first time enclosing a building with a curtain wall system. It actually saves a lot of work in some ways in Sketchup, but is harder in others. Either way, I'm not taking any shortcuts and I'm enjoying the learning curve. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by thryve; September 26th, 2010 at 09:08 PM. |

6. UPDATE
Update on The Capitol Tower's design progress.
Unfortunately, due to the siteplan, the garage door entrances have had to be placed along the main street, where the live-work townhouses and cafe are located. However, this garage entrance area has been designed to interfere with the design as little as possible, allowing more important, attractive design aspects to feature more prominently. This positioning of entrances to the underground parking garage, however, frees up space behind the tower for a courtyard area. The design of the podium is low-slung and naturally inspired, to create an attractive edge to the park space across the street. This is the first project I've created which is true on the inside to the exterior-- it's a fully working building, especially on the ground floor! I've spared few details in the main level, in terms of organizing how the rooms and corridors would be laid out. The tower itself I will leave open for more transparency in renderings but I am thinking I will create a model suite with a fully furnished interior. Comments and suggestions are welcome! ![]() ![]() Last edited by thryve; September 27th, 2010 at 05:48 AM. |

4. UPDATE
Design work on the Nurses' Residence continues. Here are some conceptual sketches from the design process, which show the building's 1920s, almost Corbusian aspirations:

Unfortunately, many of the images I've posted in this thread refuse to load. I am switching all photo links over to my new photobucket account (from Imageshack.us) and will soon have this thread back in working order

7. The District
I'm really excited about the first two phases of this project I'm working on called "The District". It's a very exciting plan that brings historical factory and warehouse buildings together with modernism inspired by industry. It's a high density project consisting of mostly mid-rises.
In the second phase (see renderings below-- these are early on-- you'll notice a lot of blank space) -- I am entering a whole new aesthetic that I'm hoping will take my work into some more exploratory, less "safe" territory: ![]()
