This beautiful church was on the south side of the Perfume River.

Country church - Phu Bai, Vietnam

This was a small church in the countryside a few miles south of the large U.S. military base at Phu Bai, which is nine miles south of Hue. I was stationed at Phu Bail for approx. six months.

Phu Bai (Hué) airport

The airport serving Hue is at Phu Bai, just across the road from the base where I was stationed. The airport is 9 miles or so south of Hue and now has a sizeable international terminal and new control tower.

Buddhist temple - Vietnam

This ornate Buddhist temple was along Vietnam Highway 1, three miles or so south of our base at Phu Bai. I was riding by in our jeep.

Street scene in Hué (đường Trần Hưng Đạo ngày nay).

I took this photo from the back of our 2 1/2 ton army truck as we drove through Hue, the beautiful old capital city of Indochina. It captures the daily life of the city in spite of the war that was waging all around. Unfortunately, Hue became a focal point of this war during the Tet Offensive, just 3 months after I took these photos.

I was in our jeep as we were stopped in Hue. This boy came over and posed for me like he was just itching to have his picture taken.

Hacienda style in Hué, Vietnam. (Tòa nhà này vẫn còn trên đường Lý Thường Kiệt, cạnh ks Festival Huế).

I photographed this beautiful home in Hue, Vietnam from the back of our army truck while in the city during my tour of duty there.

This was four months before the Tet Offensive, and I've often wondered whether this house was damaged during the fighting in the city.

Bicyclists in Hué, Vietnam (đường Lý Thường Kiệt, hàng rào trường Thiên Hựu, nay là ĐHKH Huế).

I took this photo on a quiet side street in Hue from in front of the Hue tourist office. Yes, Hue had a tourist office, even during the war, at least prior to the February, 1968 Tet Offensive.

The steeple is on the magnificent Hue Catholic Cathedral, which was built in 1962,I believe.

The riverfront is crowded (phố cổ Bao Vinh ngày nay).

I took this from a US Navy landing craft as we entered the city of Hue on the Perfume River. I was transferring to an Army base at Phu Bai, 9 miles south of Hue. It captures the bustling spirit of Hue perfectly.

Riverfront in Hué

The riverfront along the Perfume River in Hue is definitely eclectic. Look closely, and you'll see a young boy swimming out to our landing craft. He'll beg for candy. We accomodated.

Perfume River - Hué, Vietnam

A small shrine along the Perfume River between Hue and the South China Sea. I took this from the US Navy boat I was on, and children are waving at us in front of the shrine.

Perfume River, Vietnam

I was riding in a small U.S. Navy landing craft when I took this photo. I had ridden overnight just off the coastline from Danang Bay to the mouth of the river. In morning light, we proceeded up the river the several miles to the city of Hue. Along the way we passed this interesting pair of Vietnamese boats floating dowstream.

Flooded Paddies (phá Tam Giang).

I photographed this from our speeding jeep as we traveled Highway 1 from Phu Bai to Hue. Looking like a lake, it is actually flooded rice paddies during monsoon season.

I photographed this rural scene from a jeep as we passed by on Highway 1. Just where is the farmer going?

Vietnamese mother and child

I took this photo during a medical clinic being conducted by a Navy Corpsman in a village near my base in Phu Bai (near Hue). The people were very appreciative of the medical attention, as shown in the face of this mother, whose child is sporting quite a flashy hat.

Cũng có thể đó Mậu Thân khốc liệt như thế mà ngôi nhà thờ đồ sộ này hầu như không bị hư hại gì đáng kể, may quá.
