Dresden and the Bastei

A two hour train ride from Berlin Central to Dresden Central - Images made yesterday by me.

Dresden is the capital city of the Free State of Saxony in Germany. It is situated in a valley on the River Elbe, near the Czech border. Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour.

The Bastei is a rocky prominence overlooking the Elbe River within the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Germany. As a mountain of 305 meters height the Bastei surpasses the river by 194 meters. The landmark was formed by water erosion over one million years ago. Located near Rathen in Saxon Switzerland the Bastei is a landmark in a national park near Pirna southeast of Dresden. It is part of a climbing and hiking area that extends to the Czech Republic as Bohemian Switzerland.

Foggy morning

The Brühl's Terrace

Brühl's Terrace (Brühlsche Terrasse) north of the recently rebuilt Neumarkt Square, is one of the most prominent inner-city places. The name Brühl's Terrace is a reference to Heinrich, count von Brühl, who built a palais in 1737 on the location. In 1747 the whole terrace as it is today was given to him by the Saxon elector as a gift for the innovative introduction of a betterment tax.

Inside the Dresden Schloss

Dresden Castle (German: Dresdner Residenzschloss or just Dresdner Schloss) is one of the oldest buildings in Dresden and has been the residence of the Electors (1547–1806) and Kings (1806–1918) of Saxony. It includes a multitude of architectural styles, from Baroque to Neo-renaissance.

Academy of Fine Arts Dresden

The Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (German Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden) is a vocational university of visual arts located in Dresden. The present institution is the product of a merger between the famous Dresden Art Academy, founded in 1764, the workplace and training ground of a number of influential European artists, and another well-established local art school.

At the Hofkirche

The Katholische Hofkirche (English: The Catholic Church of the Royal Court of Saxony) is a Roman Catholic Cathedral, located in the 'Altstadt' in the heart of Dresden. Previously the most important Catholic parish church of the city, it was elevated to cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dresden-Meißen in 1964. The Hofkirche stands as one of Dresden's foremost landmarks. It was built by architect Gaetano Chiaveri from 1738 to 1751.

The Zwinger Palace

The Zwinger is a palace in Dresden and a major landmark of German baroque architecture. The location was formerly part of the Dresden fortress of which the outer wall is conserved. The name derives from the German word Zwinger (outer ward of a concentric castle); it was for the cannons that were placed between the outer wall and the major wall. The Zwinger was not enclosed until the neoclassical building by Gottfried Semper called the Semper wing was built to host the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister art gallery. Augustus the Strong, elector of Saxony, returned from a grand tour through France and Italy in 1687–89, just at the moment that Louis XIV moved his court to Versailles. The Zwinger was designed by Pöppelmann and constructed in stages from 1710 to 1728.

The restoration of Dresden is coming along nicely. It was pretty forlorn when I visited in 1977.

Festung Königstein in the background

Königstein Fortress, the "Saxon Bastille", is a famous historic mountaintop fortress near Dresden, in Saxon Switzerland, Germany, near the town of Königstein. The first reference to a castle at Königstein is from 1241. At that time the region was split between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Bishopric of Meissen. To delimit the boundary running between the two states, King Wenceslaus I established the castle which controlled the Elbe valley above Pirna.
