'mechanised cleaning solution' is a phrase i picked up from a magazine called 'clean india' (i think)the in house industry magazine of the indian cleaning industry.
a great read.
I had made that suggestion before, but my suggestion was shot down by a few so called educated forumers. They argued that a whole bunch of cleaning crew will lose their jobs if India adopts to a mechanized cleaning. Sadly even in this day and age these so called smart people think like socialists.

they used to water streets and roads long ago until the 70s... the britishers taught us that... but supposedly they stopped sometime in the 80s due to huge water demands... they shud use recycled water for these purposes... not sure why they don't explore recycling plants or similar options nemore...

Yes. I'v heard this from my grandfather. The small red pipes/pillars (I dunno what to call them) that are still remaining on some streets were used for that purpose.

MUMBAI MIRROR: Posted by Vicky
A jewel in the works for Queen’s Necklace.[/B]

http://www.mumbaimirror.com/index.as...725335827d9527

This is less a makeover plan and more a jewel befitting the Queen's Necklace. The state government is close to finalising a Rs 3,500-crore plan that will change the face of Mumbai's business and administrative district and provide an appropriate end-point to Marine Drive, the city's most iconic stretch.

According to the proposal, the entire area around Nariman Point will be recast into a well-connected hub that will include a Central Park near Mantralaya, two towers to house MLAs and judges and a brand new promenade on the neglected waterfront between NCPA and Badhwar Park.

The government also plans to construct a few business centres, including an "iconic" structure to house offices - much like the Gherkin in London - from which they hope to raise Rs 17,000 crore to make the entire project financially viable.

Proposal being discussed by a high-powered committee headed by the Chief Secretary I ‘Iconic’ business towers that will house offices to fund project I Park to be connected seamlessly with Churchgate for pedestrians

The proposal is being discussed at length by a high-powered committee headed by Chief Secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad and is likely to be executed by the BMC and MMRDA.

"The Citizens Action Group has cleared the plan. At the government level, we are working out modalities," Gaikwad told Mumbai Mirror.

The plan, prepared by consultants PK Das & Associates, also includes a "new Mantralaya", but the government isn't considering tearing this structure down for now.

"We cleared this plan some time ago. The chief minister, who is the chairperson of the CAG, was also present at the meeting," Citizen's Action Group vice-chairman Narinder Nayar said.

"We discussed the need for the plan to develop Nariman Point into a world-class business district. Nariman Point hasn't changed at all for the last 40 years. It's good for Mumbai if Nariman Point is developed and recast."

The centre-piece of the project is the Central Park next to Mantralaya, which will be spread over 50000 square metres (roughly three-fourths the size of Oval Maidan) and include a monument dedicated to democracy that will be built at a cost of Rs 21 crore.

"The political party offices near LIC, the MTDC office and the line of ministers' bunglows will all be demolished," a senior state government official said.

This park will be completely pedestrian friendly, and Madame Cama road - which now connects Marine Drive to Regal Cinema - will be turned into an elevated stretch that cuts above the green area, while under it will be a car park that can hold 4100 cars.

'The Avenue' - a raised pedestrians-only pathway that splits the road in two - will seamlessly connect the park to Churchgate station on one side and the Nariman Point waterfront on the other, according to the proposal. The park will also be connected to the new waterfront promenade behind NCPA.

"At present, the footpaths are uneven and do not provide seamless connectivity for pedestrians in the area," an architect with P K Das & Associates said.

The plan includes building a food court near Maker Chambers, a play area for children near NCPA and a Business Gateway near the waterfront.

MMRDA officials who are a part of the committee have asked the consultants to make provisions for a helipad as well, but the western naval command is against allowing any private helicopter movement south of Mahalaxmi.

The towers that will house judges and ministers will be built at a cost of Rs 700 crore, while Rs 100 crore has been set aside for developing 1.2 kms along the waterfront.

The consultants have suggested that the slums near NCPA and Machimar Colony near Badhwar Park be brought under SRA. Alternately, the plan suggests the current residents be shifted to one of the towers that will include offices.

Between 2002 and 2004, the state government had refurbished the entire Queen's Necklace promenade at a cost of nearly Rs 50 crore in Phase I of the Marine Drive Makeover Plan, but the subsequent phase of that project never took off.

There are images of the proposed development plan at the end of the article.

Very good!

This looks a good plan & i am pleased something is finally happening.

Nariman Point needed something like this & bring it back into the limelight.

PK Das is credited with some nice beautification of many areas in Mumbai like Bandra & Gateway.

3,500 crores for govt. offices and housing for babus? I am sure majority of slums can be removed in Mumbai from Rs. 3,500 cr. What the hell is wrong with us people?

It would be good for Mumbai if you widen some roads, clean the river, and provide affordable housing to poor and middle class people.

No it won't .. even bigger programs for SRA are running and mostly behind schedule because of various issues. Nariman Point is the CBD of Mumbai which is the financial capital of India. A better CBD will attract mor investment and will mean more money for mumbai for developmental activities. The whole programs will I think be funded through the real estate development as such.

Any such development is welcome my friend , though I do agree with the latetr part of your comment !!

It's a business district, no doubt, but the homes and offices are being built for MLAs and all. Please read the article.

ALso if they want to do something for a business district, they should clean that river near BKC, and also clean its roads of garbage.

This busniess district can be cleaned in few crore rupees, but they have "grand" plans of building mansions for themselves, let half of the city live in slums.
