There already one storey govt offices and buildings near Nariman point. They look all old now so its ok if they demolish them and stack them vertically. In the process more open space will be created. The mithi river is deepened and widened but those fucker slumdwellers keeping garbage into and chocking, it no point blaming govt. When people themselves lack civic sense no use pointing fingers at govt.

Yes, some people are just idiots. Even when there is an empty spot of land they have to go and dump their rubbish there.

Nariman Point To Get Rs3,500 Crore Make-Over
October 4, 2011 8:21 am by Editors

• Marine Make-Over. A Rs3,500 crore proposal, which is close to being finalised, will revamp Nariman Point and parts of Marine Drive. The proposal includes a 50,000 square metre park near Mantralaya, with a “monument dedicated to democracy” that will cost Rs21 crore; an iconic building structure; and an elevated stretch over Madame Cama road, which connects Marine Drive to Regal Cinema. There are also plans to build a food court near Maker Chambers, a play area for children near the National Centre for Performing Arts and a “business gateway” near the waterfront. [Mumbai Mirror]

• Project Funds. Though Maharashtra has asked the central government for additional funding for infrastructure projects in Mumbai, figures show that the state hasn’t used all of the Rs12,000 crore it has already received since 2005-2006 to complete 79 infrastructure projects. So far only 10 of these projects have been completed; while 12 projects have less than a quarter of the work completed; six projects have yet to begin; and three projects have utilised none of the funds allocated to it. [The Times of India]

• Poverty Line. The government will scrap the Rs32 a day benchmark it was using for access to anti-poverty programs. That rate has been used for years to determine who gets food and other subsidies. “Only dogs and animals can live on Rs32 a day,” N. C. Saxena, a member of the National Advisory Committee, said. Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said the government “has never taken the view that benefits should be restricted to only those below this poverty line”. [Reuters]

I was pretty surprised to know that such a glass building is being built in Nariman Point. Realised later that it is in BKC. Nariman Point will make a lot of money if they permit to conevrt it into luxury residential skyscrapers. Though it would affect the residential market in lower Parel significantly

Just the fact that there is hope that a part of Mumbai is gonna get cleaner and beautiful. But it has to happen, and it should meet the standard of living in an Urban area.

Clean Mumbai?

For the past few years all of us must have seen various locations all over the city dotted with "Clean Mumbai, Green Mumbai". Though I wonder what is the reference for BMC and the govt when they say "clean".

Mumbai and generally all over India, the biggest problem is dust. What I never understood is why the sweepers/cleaners do not do the most basics correctly.

Majority of the dust problem can be taken care of by collecting the dust, cement and sand gathered on all roadsides rather than just trying to sweep it from the one side to another. This does not make the situation any better but just raises more dust in the air.
I am sure that above activity does not require any brain storming from our babus in the govt to implement some big project, just some common sense that needs to be drilled down to the lowest level.

When you lay proper infrastructure covering the land, the dust should settle..No?

But most of our people are not good at it.

they are not provided with adequate funds (or maybe they disappear) to purchase modern machinery that can clean up cities.. the other thing is, they should use grass mats to cover up dusty areas, it will clean the air, plus it would reduce the dust levels, but you know, idiots are ruling us... so whats the use of making such suggestions??

+1

You are absolutely right. Grass mats used on open plots and tarps to cover sand reserves on construction sites will help a lot. This is commonly practised in many parts of Asia.

Thanks to Savz for the tip.

Here are some renders of the 18 acre Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment project that involves moving 25,000 people from 250+ old buildings into apartment towers.

The project is being developed by the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust which has the backing of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin - the Dawoodi Bohra community's head. All the mosques in the area will be left untouched.

From an old TOI article:
  • 18 acres, 270 buildings, 4,000 homes, 2,000 commercial establishments and 25,000 people.
  • 80% of the project involves rehousing the existing tenants free of cost in brand new buildings.
  • The other 20% will include four residential skyscrapers to be sold at the market rate to recover the project costs. (renders show 3, latest walkthrough shows 4)
  • Each rehab building will have one floor dedicated to services, provision for recreational facilities and .
  • Two basements for parking.
  • Almost 50% of the area will be reserved for open spaces and green areas

The project has many of the important clearances (including the approval of 90% of the tenants) and has been designed by US based TVS Designs:

Some relevant news from the past couple of months:

Nov 17: Chavan visits Bhendi Bazaar

Quote:
MUMBAI: Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan got a first-hand experience of the congested lanes and bylanes of Bhendi Bazaar on Wednesday.

Having expressed concern over the existence of a number of dilapidated cessed buildings in the island city, the chief minister paid a visit to the area in the morning.

The Bhendi Bazaar locality, which is abounded by such buildings, is undergoing a makeover.

The Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) is undertaking the city's first cluster redevelopment project. Under the project which has already been approved by the government, the trust is to redevelop 200 odd buildings spread across 18 acres. The project, which is estimated to cost Rs 2000 crore, involves rehabilitation of 25, 000 people and 2000 shops.

Chavan managed to get an aerial view of the entire area from the SBUT office, which is situated on the 20th floor on one of the buildings in the area. He was accompanied by union minister and member of parliament Milind Deora and local MLA Amin Patel during the visit. SBUT made a detailed presentation on the makeover plans. The trust also sought certain relaxations in norms for speeding up the project work. One of these included relaxation in a condition which requires them to seek consent from all land owners involved in the redevelopment process. SBUT already has consent of 90% land owners. The trust also sought speeding up of a Mhada survey process (certification) to enable timely makeover. SBUT is keen to complete a large part of the project by 2014.

doesn't matter much at-least development is going on and because of designs and trust only they have got approval from 90% tenants because when DB planned for Kamthipura redevelopment whole plan was rejected and that area really has islamic majority so the design is influenced.
