Approval Of China's Bullet Train Patents Up To Nations: WIPO

GENEVA (Nikkei)--Whether to grant patents on Chinese high-speed trains developed using Japanese technologies should be determined independently by each country, according to Director General Francis Gurry of the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Saying that he is not in a position to decide the matter, Gurry indicated at a news conference here Thursday that his organization will not get involved in the issue.

WIPO serves as the contact point when a patent is filed in multiple countries. Generally, a preliminary screening is necessary before the patent agency of a country in which a filing is made to determine its originality. A patent agency of an industrialized nation usually performs such screening when a developing nation is the filer. But China apparently is authorized by WIPO to carry out the screenings on its own.

China has applied for 21 patents on its technologies for trains used on the new high-speed line connecting Beijing and Shanghai in five countries and regions: Japan, the U.S., Brazil, Europe and Russia.

They have begun testing on the CRH380C set, but it is labelled as CRH380B-002, so what is the official designation for that trainset model? Videos soon.

Here's the videos of the CRH380B-002 set (CIT400B), correct me if that is not the set.

And a pair of bonus vids (so they have indeed updated the propulsion of the original CRH3C sets):

This test train is part of the CIT400B project, and it is numbered CRH380B-002 (although it uses a CRH380C nose). the other CIT400A test train is numbered CRH380A-001. I think it's just the numbering for test trains and does not affect the model designation of trains in commercial operation.

Kawasaki Heavy To Act If China Overstepped On Train Patents

KOBE (Nikkei)--Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (7012) will take action if it turns out that China in fact has filed for patents on high-speed trains made using Japanese technologies, Chairman Tadaharu Ohashi said Monday.

It was reported last week that China's railroad ministry had filed patent applications in five countries and regions, including the U.S., for high-speed train technologies supplied by Kawasaki Heavy and other firms.

"We will take some kind of action if this violates contracts signed between Japan and China," Ohashi said at a regular news conference as head of the Kobe Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

But because the details are still unclear, he added, "We should not act in haste."

FYI:

Many of China HST Operating Standard are much higher than other existing HST lines:

1) CRH380A trains power output raised to 9,600 kw from the CRH2 trains' 4,800 kw.

2) Sustainable operating speed increased to 380 kmph from 200-250 kmph.

3) Derailment coefficient lowered to 0.13 from CRH2 trains' 0.73

If one is not emotional and one is scientific, then one quickly realizes that raising the Operating Standard required many, many real breakthrough innovations.
There is no other way around this.
