Surprised that they are buying 91 sets of CRH2A, you'd think with CRH380A displacing the older 2As from front line service there will be enough trainsets to trickle down to smaller lines. I think that's an indication that more D train service will start on upgraded conventional lines.

Are there for short distance commuting (under one hour?) with standing capacity, working without reservations, the space seems to be huge...

Yes, these are more "commuter" oriented. Meant for travel inside big metropolis areas like Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but are there any plans for double-decker high speed trainsets? I notice the trains are getting more and more crowded but I wonder if that could be mitigated by having more of the current trains on the same line.

Not I know of. This one for the Aussies is probably as close to a Chinese double decker EMU as we'll get.

Ha I take that train almost every day! I'm pretty sure they were based on another series of train we had before this one, which was designed by Downer EDI here in Australia. But hey...

Anywho I guess the question rather is does China plan to develop something (or has developed something) akin to the TGV Duplex? Or maybe an EMU version?

All this considering that patronage of the CRH network is increasing.

I think, if I remember correctly, the major design was done by Downer EDI who decided to have the trains assembled in China for costings reasons

Nice looking train.
Did they based its design on the velaro ?
They look almost identical although the nose looks longer and the headlights are in a different position.

You need to keep in mind that some of CRH trains are 16-car set (with over 1000 passenger capacity -largest of any as far as I know) which is double what is used generally. Many other countries use 8 or 10 car sets. I may be wrong but even TGV Duplex has capacity of 550? So 8-car CRH trains can be turned into 16-car ones since rail station are already designed for 16-car setup. I do not think we will see double deckers soon But still who knows....

It's interesting that China decided to go with 16 car trains, does any other country with high speed rail have trains this long?

I think it's pretty normal in Europe to combine two 200 meter HST's... dunno about 400 meter in one set.

It's one way to make them look like a standard K train of 18 cars. I've seen 16 car sets that are just two 8 car sets coupled with a connecting control cable. Must be a neat trick tho' balancing the drive of all those motors
