380C is really just a little aesthetic modification to the 380B, which is a souped-up version of the CRH3

380 D is totally different

No. The reason they are similar looking is because there are only so many ways to streamline HSR trains. As you know, Velaro is a Siemens product, while the Zefiro is a Bombardier product (two major rolling stock manufacturing rivals).

It never crossed my mind that CRH380D (Zefiro) and CRH380C are 'similar looking'. At least visually I see nothing similar between them except the aerodynamic shape. CRH380B, on the other hand, does look similar to CRH380C because the latter, as I suppose, is based on the former.

Not true HSR but it's rolling stock related. First export DMU trainset to Iraq rolled off assembly line on Feb 17th. 2M8T config, 160km/h speed, capacity 343. From the look of it it's based on the CSR Puzhen Harmony Great Wall.

Is my reading correct that the Chinese text and the photo show a deisel in car one (the loco) supplying electric power to motors in cars one and five?

Seems to be the logical conclusion.

No, car 10 isn't shown in the photo above. 1 and 10 are diesel powered cars and 2-9 are not powered. Car 5 is the dining car. This is the same setup as the Great Wall and most other domestic DMUs.

Looks quite retro, maybe even a refurbished piece.

Ah, makes sense. Running traction power thru coupled cars seemed a bit too wierd.

It's a new build, but rather based on technologies from the early 2000s.

I believe between that and the CRH6F the only exterior difference is that 6F has double sliding doors while 6A is a single piece.

For some reason I thought DMUs should have passenger compartments in the power cars too. It doesn't seem to be the case with Great Wall.

Because it's not a distributed propulsion DMU, it's a concentrated propulsion DMU in Chinese terms, that's why its base the Great Wall's designation is NDJ2 (Neiranji Dongche Jizhongshi - Internal Combustion Multiple Unit Concentrated).

Sorry for my lack of knowledge but what does that actually mean? What's the difference between concentrated and distributed propulsion DMUs? They all have two power cars at both ends right?

No concentrated propulsion trains have power cars at both ends, while distributed propulsion trains have passenger space in all cars and cars other than the two ends will have engines. Those British DMUs are good examples.

Which British DMUs do you mean? Are you talking about the InterCity125 or similar? Those are not exactly DMUs but more like ordinary locomotives.
