Stillwater, Minnesota

I know that Stillwater has probably been done to death on SkyscraperCity, but what would a Twin Cities area photo thread collection be without it? Such an omission would be sacrilege.

Stillwater, Minnesota

Population: 18,410
Seat of Washington County

Nice pictures. I'm not in the Midwest section like I am the Northeast section, but I don't remember any Stillwater threads, so another one is fine.

It looks like another nice Mississippi River town. Between the bridge, and the buildings, and the river, and the hills, it seems like there's a diversity in things to look at there.

Will you continue to be going around when the peak fall colors hit?

Thanks to both of you!

I think a couple of years back there were maybe two or three Stillwater threads, but I was going to post a new one regardless.

Actually, Stillwater is on the St. Croix River which forms the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin north of its confluence with the Mississippi. The entire river valley is very, very scenic.

I most definitely will continue my voyages through the fall! Peak color around here is generally the first and second week of October, so I hope I can squeeze at least a couple places in.

One thing I've noticed about Stillwater is that it seems a lot bigger than a typical town of 18,000 because of all the tourist traffic and all the Wisconsinites who live across the bridge.

Nice pictures.

Yep, it's definitely a "day trip" town. The traffic downtown, especially this time of year, is INSANE. Basically every single route into town is jammed. It also doesn't help that traffic from Wisconsin feeds directly off the bridge and into downtown. I had to go to the top of the hill just to find a parking spot. Of course, I didn't mind since I was going to explore anyway, but my calves are making me sorry today.

Thanks, Avian!

No way, there is definitely no competition – I'm still too embarrassed to attempt the beautiful people shots Somnifor gets! I try my damnedest to make sure they're not looking before I snap and then scoot away as quickly as possible.

Thank you, Chadoh! It's definitely a gem here in the Twin Cities area.

Thanks for the nice comments, Jane!

Stillwater is one of my favorite towns in Minnesota. It's in a very scenic setting and somehow remained so beautifully intact, unlike a lot of towns in the metro area. And it's actually on the St. Croix River, which is wide enough that it can certainly be treated like a lake.

New bridge for Stillwater and it won't be downtown, bringing back the beauty and tranquillity this town deserves as I believe the birthplace of MN.

This is why my photo threads always look so empty of people. There's just no good way to get a picture of a couple or a family walking around without feeling awkward about it.

After doing these photo tours over the last couple of years, I think I've become a lot more comfortable taking people shots. You really just need to act like it's nothing while you're snapping a candid photo of someone, and nonchalantly move on once you've got it. If you don't act sneaky about it, people are almost never suspicious.

The worst thing I've had to deal with are jerks driving by and honking while I'm trying to focus on something.

Just fake the confidence, and eventually you'll be comfortable with it!

Stillwater Bridge

And traffic should be reduced, as Obama signed the bill authorizing construction of a new bridge south of downtown Stillwater:

So basically, act like a professional instead of a ........LOL!

Anyway, here's the Stillwater I know of from back in the 70's. I remember someone telling me they were from Stillwater MN and I wondered if that was true?
