All East Rail and Ma On Shan Lines stations are not ACed because they are all above ground.

This map is barely related to this forum because of the logos of Mass Turtle Railway.

Longer trains bring West Rail warning
The Standard Excerpt
Tuesday, December 29, 2015

The first eight-carriage train will begin running on the West Rail Line from Saturday, but MTR Corporation Limited is warning commuters to prepare for teething problems.

All 28 West Rail Line trains will be converted from seven to eight carriages by 2018 to cope with the additional capacity on trains being used on the Sha Tin to Central Link.

"There will be some minor problems during the conversion period, like train doors not aligning properly with the platform screen doors," said MTR operations manager Allen Ding Ka-chun.

He said more than 1,000 cables have to be reconnected and the trains will undergo strenuous system and facilities testing.

Ding said the capacity of the West Rail Line will be increased by 14 percent by 2018.

MTR still on track, says departing chairman
30 December 2015
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Raymond Chien plays down problems with Guangzhou link that have hit rail operator

Outgoing MTR Corporation chairman Raymond Chien Kuo-fung said the railway operator had continued to grow and win an international reputation despite recent setbacks.

"One can't improve until he or she surmounts the difficulties along the road," Chien said yesterday when pressed about the controversy surrounding the high-speed rail project which would link the city to Guangzhou.

The MTR, which manages the mega project's Hong Kong section, blamed "unforeseeable" outside factors such as geological challenges and construction worker shortages for delays and cost overruns. "We didn't know there were so many 'black swans' in the world," said Chien.

But he insisted that the MTR had long been well-known for its good service, and had successfully restored its credibility shortly after the news of cost overruns broke.

"I have no regrets about the project," he said, while admitting there had been insufficient communication between departments within the corporation.

He said the project remained in good shape, dismissing the potential impact of changes in the mainland part of the link after reports that two more stops to be added across the border would increase travel time. "Every network system has its own logic," said Chien, while the government clarified that it was sticking to the original plan for four stations only.

Under a controversial agreement announced last month, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link will be completed in the third quarter of 2018, with the cost revised to HK$84.42 billion - HK$880 million less than the last estimate.

Chien, who took over as chairman 12 years ago, will be replaced by former commerce minister Frederick Ma Si-hang in January.

West Rail Line's new train breaks down on day one
3 January 2016
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Hiccups 'inevitable', says MTR as first eight-car service experiences instability after just 5 hours

The West Rail Line's first eight-car train broke down on its debut day yesterday after barely five hours in operation.

One of the two computers on the train reported an instability issue around 10.45am. The train had started running between Hung Hom and Tuen Mun stations at 6.05am.

While the issue did not affect the safety of train operation, MTR decided to send the train back to the depot for checks. An MTR spokesperson said it was "inevitable" that the new train needed time to run smoothly.

The conversion from seven-car trains to an eight-car design is part of the MTR's Shatin to Central Link project, which is expected to open in 2019.

Converting all of the West Rail Line's 28 trains would take at least 30 months, with the conversion expected to increase overall carrying capacity by 14 per cent.

Yes. No issues, but need to be courteous and not use flash to blind the driver.

Boy’s foot caught in escalator in MTR Central Station
Hong Kong Economic Journal Excerpt

A four-year-old boy from the mainland injured his right foot when it got caught in an escalator leading to a platform at the MTR Central Station but escaped serious injury, Apple Daily reported.

The boy, surnamed Gao, was traveling in Hong Kong with his father and grandparents on a five-day tour from Beijing.

The foursome were on their way to Tsim Sha Tsui to visit the Science Museum when the accident took place at 11:15 a.m. Saturday.

The boy was reportedly standing in front with his grandfather, who was carrying a baby stroller at the time, on an escalator going down to the platform for trains to Tsuen Wan.

When they reached the foot of the escalator, the boy, who was wearing a pair of sports shoes, accidentally jammed his right foot in a gap in the escalator.

A safety alarm was triggered, and the escalator came to a stop.

MTR staff rushed to the scene and called police.

An ambulance and staff of the escalator contractor arrived in about 15 minutes.

They removed the panels of the escalator and eventually managed to free the child from the device after 20 minutes.

A fellow user of the escalator, surnamed Lam, who witnessed the whole incident, said the accident did not surprise him, as there had been many similar incidents in the past involving escalators.

The grandfather of the boy told reporters that three toes on his right foot were bleeding.

The boy was reportedly discharged from hospital Saturday night.

A representative of MTR Corp. said that apart from an intensive inspection conducted annually, all its escalators are scheduled for regular maintenance every fortnight.

The escalator in question was last inspected on Dec. 28, and it was shown to be functioning normally after another inspection by the contractor Sunday, after the accident.

Cameras at the ready as assaults on MTR staff double
22 January 2016

Assaults of MTR staff doubled to 40 last year - from 21 in 2014 - prompting the rail operator to extend the use of body cameras for its inspectors.

Some of the verbal and physical assaults, mostly involving carrying of oversized luggage, have been reported to police. Thirteen of the alleged attacks were committed against some of the 190 by-law inspection unit members who patrol stations to enforce MTRCL bylaws.

These include restrictions on over- sized luggage. They carry out duties in small teams on concourses and platforms of major stations along the East Rail Line and in trains. These include weekly joint patrols with police.

MTRCL operations manager Allen Ding Ka-chun said the increase in assaults was probably related to more passengers carrying oversized luggage amid a 73 percent surge in warning letters issued - from about 4,700 in 2014 to 8,100 last year.

A pilot scheme of the bodycams, worn by the bylaw inspection unit during patrols, was launched in February, with three cameras at Sheung Shui station. The cameras made 11 recordings last year, with two pieces of footage handed to police.
