The Blue Line connects from Downtown to Long Beach. Riverside? Take Metrolink.

It can't be Europe, Asia had 2008 and Australasia had 2000. We're looking at Africa or North or South America. Inevitably, the USA will take most prominence in the bidding, despite last having a games in 1996 (incidentally 20 years is probably as long as they can be expected to go without hosting a games.

If the IOC is determined to be imaginative rather than pragmatic, then there isn't much choice. Africa is the great token continent for any international sporting body looking for a venue and there is only one country (SA) capable of making a bid. Jo'burg or Durban would have sounded a lot more original if FIFA hadn't beaten the IOC to the idea.

Similarly, South America poses just as much difficulty to throw up an economy capable of taking on the Olympic mantle. Could it be argued that Brazil and therefore Rio are the equivalents for that continent?

North America leaves Mexico City (again, and not ideal) or Canada (but for God's sake not Montreal again!) or the US. Realistically, anything outside of the US would be a massive deliberate snub. There are probably a dozen cities in the US that could stage the games (but perhaps anything less would be a stretch - like Atlanta) and there has been a lot of talk about pro-NY sentiment, although maybe two terms of a Democrat president may be required to resurrect that.

Being a little idealistic here, what odds on an arabic games? Somewhere like Dubai isn't too close to the hotspots and they wouldn't have any problem with a $20bn price tag. A little bridge-building maybe, in the spirit of the Olympian values?

Chicago should first learn how to translate "Welcome to Chicago" in Greek before they bid for the Olympic Games!..

www.chicagotribune.com

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Published May 16, 2007

Chicago's Olympic committee -- the political group hoping to lure the 2016 Olympics
here for the everlasting glory of Mayor Richard Daley -- has been running newspaper ads
with official foreign languages of welcome.

"Welcome to Chicago" the copy reads, in Spanish, French, German, Arabic,
Italian, Swahili, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Chinese, even Portuguese,
11 languages to welcome visitors if and when Chicago wins the Olympic bid.

They had 12 languages, but the Chicago's 2016 committee dropped Greek
from their most recent ads because, committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky
said Tuesday, they couldn't agree on how to say "Welcome to Chicago" in Greek.

The Olympics were born in Greece, so how moronic is the excuse that they
couldn't agree on a proper welcome? All they had to do was call my mom or
city Corporation Counsel Mara Georges to find out.

But today's controversy involves the Poles.

The Poles are one of the largest ethnic groups in the Chicago area. But the
2016 Olympic committee decided not to include Polish among their officially
recommended languages of welcome.

Swahili and Portuguese, yes. Spanish, yes. Italian, yes. German, yes.

But Polish?

Nie. (No, if you're speaking Polish)

Oxi. (No, if you're speaking Greek.)

"What about the Poles?" demanded Spartacus, the young reporter of Polish
descent who helps me with the column and who just received his ethnically
sensitive nickname.

"Well," Sandusky, the spokesman for the mayor's 2016 Olympic committee,
answered on Tuesday, "We didn't have room for everybody."

We didn't have room for everybody? That's something the bloodthirsty
Cossack Taras Bulba (Yul Brynner) might say after he lopped off a few Polish
heads in the old days of the Polish-Cossack wars. It's been said there are
almost as many Poles in the Chicago area as in Warsaw. But Chicago's City
Hall doesn't have room for the Poles?

Given all the languages, it looks like they had room for almost everybody,
except the Poles (and, of course, the Greeks).

And that surely won't cut the kielbasa (or the flaming cheese) in this town.

Some of you may wrongly rush to blame Daley. But please, understand that
he didn't do it. His underlings did. The underlings spilled the mayoral czarnina and let it hit the fan.

But isn't it foolish to exclude Polish to welcome foreigners to Chicago?

"No Polish? No Polish?!" shouted Spartacus when he hung up. "This town is full
of Poles. And we're being DISCRIMINATED AGAINST, AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN."

Spartacus' lament was so piercing in its melancholy that it could be plainly
heard on the east side of Czestochowa, perhaps even by two crazed soccer fans quaffing cold Zagloba beer.

As someone who embraces diversity, I like all the languages mentioned, and
someday, perhaps even English may be recognized. But first Greece was
slapped, and now Poland, and recompense will be demanded

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is really pathetic and actually a serious issue! Why?

Option 1:
If the true reason is that they couldnt find a proper translation for "Welcome to Chicago" (which already sound so ridiculous) then how can they serious want to bid for the olympics? If they cant find a solution for such a minor and simple "problem" how can they organize the olympics!!!

Option 2:
Well i think that we all agree that option 1 is just a pathetic excuse for option 2: "We didn't have room for everybody."

They have room for Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Italian, Swahili, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Chinese, even Portuguese but not for the language of the Birthplace of the Olympics? Do they realize what they are bidding for? This is not the Super Bowl my fellows from chicago! This are the Olympic Games. Such a rude and disrespectful behavior already disqualifies them as a serious candidate for the Olympics.

Drop the implying.

Chicago didnt made a mistake. The Chicago commitee had the chance to correct this "mistake" but even then the spokesman answered "We didn't have room for everybody." This is not a mistake! This was a reasoned answer. If they want to host the Olympic Games then they have to change this disrespectful attitude.

Greece is not everybody when it comes to the Olympic Games!!!

anyway thats where it ends for me.

Savas, I didnt know that..being disrepectful to cultures and countries is not on.
I am simply suggesting that the mistake that they failed to correct does not mean they are incapable of hosting the games

Then you didnt understand the whole meaning of my post. And it is a sad thing that a have to explain itt to you... Because you declare your self as a big fan of the Olympic Games...

I was not talking about capability!! Of course chicago is capable to host the Olympic Games. But this is not the major criterion.. The most importand thing is.. Do they diserve to host the Games? This is the question.. As i said in another forum:

This was a reasoned answer not a mistake. It isnt that they forgotten to translate into greek... They thought about it, decided not to include greek and then they say "no room for everybody" as couldn't care less about it.

I dont like this kind of attitude. It lacks education and awareness of what the Olympic Games are!
