Argentina's first 200 years aniversary from the Independency declaration is going to be on 2016. It would be nice to celebrate it with the Olimpic Games here.

Buenos Aires can host the Olympics by 2016, it is already one of the largest cities in the world in terms of GDP,

GDP:

2005/2020:
Buenos Aires: $245 billion/$416 billion (70% growth)
Sao Paulo:$225 billion/$411 billion (83% growth)
Toronto (perennial Olympic contender):$209 billion/$327 billion (56% growth)
Sydney:$172 billion/$256 billion (49% growth)
Beijing:$84 billion/$260 billion (209% growth)

Per Capita 2020:

Buenos Aires:$26,873
Sao Paulo:$19,054
Toronto:$51,577
Sydney:$49,420
Beijing:$23,318

Imo...Argentina can do it, and if Argentina grows at about 5% as its expected to for the long run...Argentina might even over take South Korea in PPP per capita. We'll see...Argentina does have a history of...false messiahs.

Personally I think Argentina would first have to show 10 years of stability for economics before they could think about winning a bid and that would be 2011 when a bid could be mounted and that rules out a bid for 2016.

Well when u think about it, Los Angeles in 1932 hosted the Olympics when the US economy was on the verge of total collapse. In the summer of 1932 the US economy reached the lowest depths of the depression, yet it was still held in the US...if economic growth was a factor the USSR should have held it instead. (I know it was a different time, etc. just saying this is the logic presented)

Argentina's fundamentals are MUCH better than 2001, firstly debt has been reduced by almost $80 billion since that time in a punishing "haircut" by the Argentine authorities against bond holders, and Argentina isn't it finding it too difficult to attract new investors in their bonds they have consistently had demand be higher than supply, investors have short memories.

Argentina is in a very favorable position, with current account and budget surpluses which have allowed the government to accumulate over $44 billion in FOREX the highest ever, thus it is not likely that another speculative attack on the peso will occur. Also consider that the peso now is highly competitive, not like in 2001 when it was clearly overvalued for the value of Argentine products.

The biggest problem in Argentina isn't growth so much as it is inflation, as it is the bette noire of the economy in Argentina. Argentina's economy is not like a developed country in the sense that interest rates will bring down inflation, much of the inflation is due to the fact that Argentine's consume what they export...food. So farmers due to a lack investment in the argo sector are forced to raise prices and also they get greedy. The IMF solutions don't work in these economies.

Point is that Argentina's economy should continue to grow very well for a long while to come due to the high demand from India, China, Russia, and Brazil for their food stuffs and the increasing prices for those goods. It does not look like these prices will go down significantly any time soon. I am optimistic on Argentina this time around due to a totally new international order more resembling pre-WWI due to higher demand, remember that 2001 was a completely different economy than today as well.

like dubai will host it any time soon

no really did dubai ever host a major event are there any events coming soon NO none.

sorry but thats a Fact

on the other hand doha has chances of hosting this event more than dubai
since we already hosted 2006 15th Asian Games and a good one too and in 2011 doha has won the rights to host the 4th Asian Indoor games and the Asian Cup which both give a boost in doha's chances.

Would have to agree. Dubai is not even on the radar screen as far as sports go. There are very few major sporting events that happen there. I can't think of even one. The IOC also wants a good showing from the host nation. How many UAE athletes have won medals in the past?

Being a sporting nation means more than building a nice stadium, or throwing money at it. People in Dubai might think they deserve the Olympics, but the Olympics deserves alot better than the UAE.

Even though I respect the job Doha supposedly did for the Asian games to be frank neither Doha or Dubai has much of a chace in hell to get the games anytime soon if maybe ever.

I hope Rio gets it for 2016. That would allow Toronto to bid for 2020.

There is a good reason why Argentina has only ever had 1 World Cup and no Olympic games awarded to it.

I'd love to see an Olympic Games in South America, but there always seems to be a major obstacle preventing it. In Rio it is crime and inhospitable fans. In Buenos Aires it is the 2001 economic collapse.

Chicago will be hard to beat. After 2008 in Asia and 2012 in Europe, the IOC is going to favour a host city from the Americas or Africa. No interested bid city in these regions comes close to what Chicago can offer.

Unfortunately, a Chicago win will doom Toronto's chances in 2020. Toronto has stated it's intention to bid in 2020, but not if Chicago wins 2016. I don't think I can bear it. The ducks never seem to be lined up right for Toronto. Bid rigging is largely suspected in losing the 1996 bid to Atlanta. No one was ever going to beat Beijing in 2008 even though the IOC insisted the bid wasn't locked up already. 2010 Winter Olympics are in Vancouver, so Toronto thought it impossible to win a 2016 bid. Now Chicago seems likely in 2016, so we may have to wait till 2028.

People do not seem to understand that Argentina has recovered from the 2001 crash in most respects...get over it.

Doha 2016 Olympics ?

Doha To Launch Serious 2016 Bid – Chairman Appointed

Leading businessman Hassan Ali Bin Ali has been appointed Chairman of the Doha 2016 Summer Olympic Games bid by his Highness, The Heir Apparent Sheikh Tameem Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

Qatar’s bid appears to be serious. Several international consultants to support the bid process have been appointed including Helios Partners, Burson-Marsteller, Vero Communications/Mike Lee, Clifford Chance, Andrew Craig of The Craig Company and Erwin Roth of SBV. The group has worked within the Olympic Movement for more than three decades with candidate cities, TOP sponsors and the Olympic Family.

Since it’s the first time that a country from the Middle East has entered the race for an Olympic and Paralympic Games, Hassan Ali Bin Ali believes it is a turning point for the region. He said, “hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Doha in 2016 would bring the Olympic flame to the Arab speaking world for the first time. The people of Qatar would be honoured to play a part in bringing the Olympic ideals to millions of new hearts and minds. Awarding the Games to Doha could, through sport, create hope, understanding and produce a change that would unite the entire region with the rest of the world”.

Hassan Ali Bin Ali is described as one of Qatar’s leading businessmen. He has also been instrumental in setting up the Shafallah Centre for Children with Special Needs, called one of the world’s leading educational, care and research centres for children with special needs. He is a driving force in providing sporting facilities for athletes with disabilities in Qatar through his role as Vice-Chairman of the Qatar Sport Federation for Special Needs and is the founder of the Qatar Tennis and Squash Federation.

Doha’s credentials include hosting the 2006 Asian Games, which has been described as the biggest, most widely reported and most successful Games ever. It has also hosted some of the world’s most prestigious sporting events and will be hosting the 2011 Asia Football Cup.

According to a press release Hassan Ali Bin Ali believes that Doha is setting new standards in sport. “We already have a world class sporting infrastructure. The ASPIRE Academy and Khalifa stadium were acknowledged to be among the best in the world in a global contest organized by the International Association for Sports Leisure Facilities and sponsored by the IOC. If we had the honour to host the Games in 2016 we would produce an unprecedented sporting spectacle”.

A “spectacular” launch of Doha 2016’s Olympic bid will take place in September when the logo and key themes of the bid will be unveiled. Complete details of the launch will be announced on an initial Doha 2016 website before the end of August while the full Doha 2016 website will be launched in October.
