Maybe not, but isn't it fairly obvious that it represents the forested hills, the beach, and the sea; an image which comes to mind when anyone, anywhere thinks of Rio?

I think it's a neat design which sums up exactly what Rio is all about.

Though whether choosing a heart shaped emblem is wise is another matter!

It s obviously a "Rio city" logo. It sums up what Rio is about but no way what Rio has to do with the Games about.
I would prefer something more olympic on the logo. This one was great:

True. At first I thought Rio's logo was like a heart in which there are two green butterflies...

True also for the fact that Sugar Loaf isn't a very well known landmark. I know a lot as far as landmarks go and the only Sugar Loaf I know of is a mountain in New England really popular here in Canada.

It's 2 laughing bottlenose dolphins -- a mom and her kid. Of course, that's the polite way of putting it.

Why the Sugar Loaf isn't a very well known landmark? You don't know?

A good logo is NOT a good one if it has to be explained.

Rio has a nice logo this time, but remember 3 previous bids have used hearts (Lille 2004, Paris 2012 and there was one other). And they all lost!!

I though that logo can be used if chicago wins the bid?

Yeah, but it'll probably a more dynamic logo. This was good for the bid -- and winning cities don't like to reuse old logos no matter how good.

The Chicago Star is a symbol with real universal meaning. A star rises in the night to become a guiding light. A star is a source of inspiration, a diamond glistening in the sky. In Ancient Greece, where the Olympic Games were founded 2000 years ago, the stars shaped mythic constellations of heroes. Stars literally guided the explorers who shaped the modern map of our world. Throughout time, stars have been a symbol of hope to mankind.

We aspire for this logo to become a great symbol of hope for our city and our nation — as we humbly seek the right to host the Olympic Games and welcome the world to Chicago in 2016.

For us, the Chicago Star also symbolizes our plan to put the athletes at the center of the Games — since they're the real stars.

Like a compass pointing in all directions, this logo reaches out to the world. The bands of color radiating up and down from the star reflect both the dynamic architecture of our city and the beautiful character of our parks and lakes — but they also symbolize our desire to reach out to the world and offer many paths to the Games.

Most importantly, the Chicago Star is designed to carry a message to our children, to help teach the next generation about the ideals and values found in the Olympic Games. The six-point design of the Chicago Star is unique and each point on this star represents values and ideals that the Olympic Movement and Chicago share: The top point represents Hope, the next point, Respect, then Harmony, Friendship, Excellence and Celebration. http://www.chicago2016.org/why-chica...icagoStar.aspx

you cant use certain Olympic symbols in the design...in this case, the torch. What better way for a logo to represent the olympic games then by taking out of it everything that represent them right? Makes perfect sense to me.

The rules have only recently changed, presumably so that the upcoming host(s) has the sole rights to use Olympic symbols.
