It's already modernized. All it needs now is to have more skyboxes and fix the poor views from the top where the video screens were set up. All of which will be done by 2014 WC.

Before this turns into a flame war, I want to explain my stance a bit more clearly:

In the past bids from Africa and South America, which were rare, didn't come up to the standards the IOC expects (the fact that Rio 2012 didn't even shortlist should tell you this). That's why we haven't seen an Olympics on these continents. And that's fair enough, the IOC couldn't be expected to risk their showpiece events.

Rio 2016 is one of the first bids from this region that does seem to match the standards the IOC are after (though that'll be confirmed, or otherwise, when the evaluation reports are published). But just because South America is, for once, in a strong position and arguably the favourite, and just because their financial plan is arguably more solid than the other cities', that doesn't automatically mean Rio should get the Games. This is a bidding contest and the USA, Spain and Japan have all put forward good bids as well - and those places have just as much of a right to believe they're in with a good chance.

-------

That's my stance. Nothing even slightly prejudice there.

RobH, not that it makes a difference or is relevant to 2016 but for the record Buenos Aires has put bids and the past and has come close to hosting the games.

i think japan has the best stadium, chicago second, but i think japan has the least chance of getting it because- although it has an amazing bid and is well fit for this event, it already has had the olympics before, and beijing got the olympics in 2008 so that weakens the chances of the whole continent, madrid would give europe 2 consecutive olympics, and rio has already gotten another huge event in 2014, Chicago has the strongest chance IMO the continent hasnt hosted an olympic event in 20 years by 2016, and Chicago has never had an event this big, and even had the olympics taken from it by St. Louis to coincide with the worlds fair, Chicago will get it i think

If the rugby stays inside the Olympic games, how many stadiums will need?

^ One or maybe two stadiums. Unlike proper 15 a side Rugby Union, Rugby 7's games only go for 20 or 30 minutues, and teams can play multible times a day.

HuH? Salt Lake City had the Olympics in 2002 and Vancouver gets the Olympics in 2010.

Why should we consider US cities ''independent''? What you said makes no sense. Chicago isn't a country, is a city in the USA, a country who hosted the games 8 times.

Because the Games are awarded to cities, not countries. The truth is the US has a lot of cities capable of hosting, so will likely get the Games more often than other countries who only have one or two. Of course, you can never seperate the city from the country completely, but it is primarily the city, its commitment to the Games, its people, its mayor, its pitch, that wins the IOC over. That's why Chicago is the bookies' favourite despite the US having hosted many times before. This doesn't work in the same way as the world cup bidding process.

Well, the cities need to get past the country's Olympic Committee first to place a bid, and once that is done, the city's bid is very much equal to the country's bid on the international arena.

^ How odd, on account your avatar, if I'm not mistaken is from the movie Brazil! Rio should win! Then Chicago, if the IOC believes now isn't, though it very much is, time for Rio.

TOKYO, RIO & CHICAGO - Who will win?!

The main opponents Olympiad 2016 is a Tokyo and Rio! Tokyo-the best of all cities-applicants for the Olympic Games in terms of readiness and financing! And Rio worthy opponent Tokyo and Chicago, because in that country has not yet Olympiad, the country's rich and big, booming economy, and the city of Rio can gracefully hold Olympiad in 2016!
