I was hoping that Japan would land it, but it's nice that the Olympics are coming back to America. It's been a very long time since it's been held on this continent. Congratulations Brazil.

I believe so. The US is unlikely to bid and today could have been the beginning of a long and testy relationship between the USOC and IOC. I don't see Madrid or Parid bidding, while any serious African bid will be in 2024 IMO. They will bid and with no strong favorite like Paris, London, Beijing or Athens, I think they can use their previous bid experience to win in 2020. Toronto could be their strongest competition, but Toronto would be smart to wait until 2024 because the bid process would come after they hosted the Pan-Am Games and that could be used to support their bid like Rio did this time around.

America's only future chance is San Francisco - 2020.

Don't worry, Chicago will still be there in 200 years from now and if not...It wont be because of the IOC.....

Yeah, its bull. The IOC is notorious for its European bias.

No way. The city and state do not have the money for such an undertaking right now. I don't think any US city seriously bids for any Olympic Games until past 2030 with Denver bidding on a Winter Olympics being a possible exception. The IOC has a major battle on its hands and will struggle to generate the revenue they're used to now that they've made an enemy in the USOC.

Rio becomes the Olympic dream into reality and win the 2016 Games

On Friday a historic day for sport in Brazil, Rio bid surpasses rivals Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago in the race in Copenhagen

Rafael Maranhão
Copenhagen

It is impossible to predict what will be the greatest athletes in the world in seven years. Possible, yes, you know what stage they will shine: Rio de Janeiro. On Friday a historic day for Australian sport, the locals in Copenhagen won the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. Until the opening ceremony at the Maracana will be more than 2,400 days. Plenty of time to play hard each mode shape new idols and, above all, leave the city even more wonderful. Overcome rivals Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago, finally can not tell you with all the letters: the ball is in the River

After two unsuccessful attempts, the Rio wins the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games
When the president of the International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge opened the envelope with the five Olympic rings and announced the victory of Rio, were two simultaneous explosions of joy. On Copacabana Beach, the crowd awaiting the result dropped the cry and began to celebrate under a rain of confetti. Within the Bella Center, the members of the Brazilian delegation repeated the party so effusive. Without tears, Pele commanded the celebration, hugging President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Governor Sergio Cabral, Mayor Eduardo Paes and athletes of the delegation. Amid shrieks and hugs, it was difficult to find an audience in Singapore that was not crying.

Meanwhile, on Air Force One, Barack Obama has returned home with empty hands and a disappointing first round. Japan's population, mostly against the application, can celebrate the output in the second phase. Madrid surprised and advanced to the final, but failed emplacar two Olympics followed in Europe. And the Brazilian victory over the Spaniards in the last round came with leftovers: 66 votes against 32.

Brazil, which struggled for more than a decade the right to host the Games, won the race in tears, just as often celebrate their achievements over the podium at competitions around the world. With a performance marked by emotional tone on Friday, the river gave the final thrust to convince members of the International Olympic Committee to plant the Olympic movement in South America for the first time.

The Brazilian team vibrates at the time of listing victory actually began well before that. After two failed attempts for the editions of 2004 and 2012, the project of 2016 had the merit of bringing together the three spheres of government. In addition, the delegation included not only the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, but a list of sports stars such as Pele, Cesar Cielo, Guga and Torben Grael.

When they announced the premature deletion of Chicago and Tokyo, Rio knew that on the last round of voting, a tough opponent. Technical report of the IOC, Madrid was ahead of Rio. At the time of decision, however, voters changed their minds.

When Brazil was still in the early morning, began the presentations in Copenhagen. The first city to speak to members of the Olympic Committee was Chicago. President Barack Obama, who had arrived a few hours before it strengthened the discourse of "one America's doors open to the world." The presentation was practical and still passed for a time to just quit when the Pakistani Syed Shahid Ali, IOC member, questioned the difficulty that some foreigners have to get an entry visa in the United States. Emphatic, Obama said he believes a country more receptive to the world. But will the 2016 Games to prove the thesis.

In the presentation of Tokyo, Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama was uncomfortable at having to speak in English. Given the concern of the IOC with the environment, the Japanese tried to convince voters that could make the Games more environmentally friendly in history. Apparently, they failed.

The IOC President Jacque Rogge announces the winning city Rio as Brazil entered the scene in the third presentation, hitting the key that South America deserved the chance, finally, to host the event. The Central Bank president, Henrique Meirelles, came to quote the pre-salt as trump green-yellow. Governor Sergio Cabral and Mayor Eduardo Paes strengthened the link between all the political sphere. But it was the emotion that set the tone of the speeches. The young Barbara Leoncio, athletics, did not contain the tears as his image appeared on screen. And President Lula described the spirit of the application to cite the Brazilian passion for the sport: "The time has come."

Madrid came next and surprised. The Spanish capital has shown a design safe and reliable, even in one of its weaknesses: the doping control - led the delegation to Copenhagen a letter with assurances from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). With 77% of the facilities already built for 2016, Madrid submitted an application to few risks. "It's the safe decision," said the Spanish prime minister Jose Luis Zapatero.
