How many people live in the US? 280 million at least probably more. How many live in the UK 60 million. that's 340 million English speakers allready. Add Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand as first language speakers, and you see a much larger figure.

Now add all the secondry English speaking countries, along with places like Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa there are millions that know English in places like India (it is often used to communicate between the many different languages that exist in India), Malaysia etc. Go to Sweden and you'll find very few who don't know English.

I think those figures are pretty wrong.

Anyway this is off topic.

itīs interesting to see this kind of fights ( they often show misconceptions/wrong ideias about other ppl or nations) , the most interesting is wharever bulshitt both sides could say, itīs not able to them to decide whoīs gonna get de bid.
So i admire ur eternal nationalist effort to get more votes of de SSC comunity
said that i seen all projects , im between Madrid and Moscow

That's clearly wrong - if you add the populations of the USA and UK you have 350m English speakers, and that's before counting Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc. etc. etc...

Another absolutely ridiculous statement. Even with English you Americans think you own it. lets get this straight, you think English is the most widely spoken language because of Movies and Songs? the langauge spread because of numerous events industrial revoultion, trade, sports, British empire ect. you really are to ignoarnt not to realise this.

The following is a list of these languages in terms of the number of countries where each is spoken. The number that follows is the total number of countries that use that language (from Weber, 1997):

English (115)
French (35)
Arabic (24)
Spanish (20)
Russian (16)
German (9)
Mandarin (5)
Portuguese (5)
Hindi/Urdu (2)
Bengali (1)
Japanese (1)

Over 521 million speak English as thier first langauge while over 1.4 Billion as the 2nd.

Why should Eddyck say anything? you are thinking allong very nationalistic lines here. What EnglishKevin says is nothing but his own oppinion.

Everyone should remember when talking on these forums that you should never lump together groups of people together because they share an area of land as their home land. Follow that logic and whenever a person kills someone we may as well all head off to prison or spend our whole lives appologising to others.

Maybe as a first, but not in total. In that think of how many europeans learn Englsih, hink of how many Indians know English, maybe not even second but third language.

You are being a bit ignorant. The point is doing such things skews the poll results making it pointless.

So?? What's the problem? EVERY single registered user of this forum has the right to vote in this poll! What's the problem with making a "campaign" asking for voting on Madrid's bid? That's what every politician does when the elections period come: they encourage people to vote their political party
Just do the same and stop complaining...

That's silly, read my post. Surely we were supposed to be voting on the best bid, not seeing which national forum has the most nationalists.

It has become another WAR OF WORDS. They say all wars are started in Europe!. One or two of the English posters are unbelievably insular, like a person blowing their own trumpet.

Yes we were supposed to vote the best bid, but sincere votes in this poll won't even reach 5%. Most Spaniards think Madrid's the best, most English think London is the best, most French think Paris is the best...the votes from Spain,Uk,France,Russia and USA will always be really subjective.
it's not because of nationalism,it's because a Spaniard will tend to prefer Madrid (as being its capital city) than moscow, for example..
