Bank Mandiri Museum (formerly: Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij), Jakarta Indonesia

The museum building was formerly housing the Netherlands Trading Society (Dutch Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij or NHM), also known as "Factorij". The building stands on an area of 10,039 square meters. It was designed by J.J.J de Bruyn, A.P. Smits and C. van de Linde. Construction started in 1929 and was opened on January 14, 1933 by C.J Karel Van Aalst, the 10th President of NHM. The architecture follows the philosophy of the Dutch Nieuw Zakelijkheid, a branch of modern architecture close to Art Deco.

The building was nationalized in 1960, becoming the property of the Department of Export-Import of the Bank Koperasi Tani & Nelayan (BKTN). This became the Bank Export Import Indonesia (or Bank Exim) on December 31, 1968 until the legal merge of Bank Exim, Bank Dagang Negara, Bank Bumi Daya, and Bank Pembangunan Indonesia to become Bank Mandiri in 1999

Lawang Sewu (formerly Office of Nederlands-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij), Semarang, Indonesia

Lawang Sewu (in Javanese meant thousands door and it really does have 1300 doors) was designed by C. Citroen, from the firm of J.F. Klinkhamer and B.J. Quendag. Construction began in 1904 with A building, which was completed in 1907. The rest of the complex was finished in 1919. It was initially used by the Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij, the national railway of the Dutch East Indies. After the Japanese conquest, the building were turned into a prison and is now believed to be "haunted".

Zion Church, Jakarta, Indonesia

The church was formerly known as De Nieuwe Portugeesche Buitenkerk ("The New Portuguese Outer Church"), referring to its position on the outside of the city wall, as opposed to Portugeesche Binnenkerk, "the Portuguese Inner Church"). The church was also known as Belkita during the period.

The church was built outside the old city walls for the so-called "black Portuguese" - the Eurasians and natives captured from Portuguese trading posts in India and Malaya and brought to Jakarta (then Batavia) as slaves. Most of these people were Catholics, but were given their freedom on the condition that they joined the Dutch Reformed Church, and the converts were known as Mardijker or the liberated ones.

The construction of the church was started in 1693. It was officially opened on Sunday, October 23, 1695 and was jointly financed by the Portuguese and the VOC Government. The first sermon was delivered by Reverend Theodorus Zas and was attended by Governor General Willem van Outhoorn. The church contains copper chandeliers, a baroque-style ebony pulpit, and the original organ. The furnishings were made by craftsmen from Formosa (Taiwan). The pipe organ was donated by the daughter of Reverend John Maurits Moor.

Metropole Cinema, Jakarta, Indonesia

Metropole is the oldest movie theater and largest remaining Art Deco building in Jakarta. The architect of the building was Liauw Goan Sing, but was often mistaken to be Johannes Martinus Groenewegen. The building was constructed in 1932 and given the name Bioscoop Metropool in Dutch. The name was changed to Megaria during the presidency of Sukarno, who carried out an anti-Western policy. In its early days, Megaria primarily screened films released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was one of the theaters that screened films during the first Indonesian Film Festival in 1955 and was a supporting theater when the city hosted the 16th Asia Pacific Film Festival in 1970.

It's awesome seeing how the dutch architecture has translated to its former colonies. Hope the buildings are preserved!

Some of the buildings in Indonesia are well preserved while some are not, many have suffered demolition and threat from development as well, but luckily there is awareness againts demolition of Dutch colonial buildings today as compared to the past and there is a law againts demolition of buildings that were tagged "heritage". In post independence era large number of buildings were ignorantly demolished because of nationalistic reasons, and many were left neglected and deteriorating. It wasn't until these last recent years that buildings started to be renovated and rebuilt again. I am hoping to see a full restoration of colonial buildings in Indonesia.
