Jakarta Art Building (formerly: Schouwburg Weltevreden or Comedy Building Weltevreden) (1821), Jakarta, Indonesia

In 1820 the bamboo theater began to show signs of deterioration, and in 1821, supported by the Dutch colonial government, it was replaced with a more permanent structure. The architect chosen to design the building was J.C. Schultze. The building contractor was Lie Atjie, who took material from the spinhuis in the old town area to use for the new theater. Construction took 14 months. The new building was designed in Neoclassical style and was called Schouwburg Weltevreden, also popularly known as Gedung Komedi ("Comedy building"). Inauguration was planned for October 1821 but had to be postponed until December 7 because of a cholera epidemic. The first performance in the building was Shakespeare's Othello.

During the mid 19th century, the development of Schouwburg Weltevreden was slow, and it had difficulty making a profit, because Batavia lacked European female opera singers and did not have a complete orchestra. The government took over the theater in 1848, when the private company failed, and held it until 1892. In 1911 its administration was assigned to the city of Batavia.

At first, lighting inside the building was done using candles and kerosene lamps. Gas light came in 1864. Electricity was first used inside the building in 1882, but gas light was still used outside until 1910.

Hotel Dibya Puri (Formerly: Du Paviliun) (1847), Semarang, Indonesia

There is this building called Dibya Puri Hotel, which was built in 1847, and used to be named Du Pavillon. It’s located at Bojong Street (now Pemuda Street), Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. At the first time, the hotel consisted of some buildings, which were connected to each other. It was a two-floor-villa, before it was changed to be an inn for an economic reason. During the era, it was the second hotel in Semarang ever built. The first one was Jansen Hotel, located at Heeren Sraat Street (now Let.Jend. Suprapto Street).

Built in Dutch colonialism era, the inn was designed with a classic style of Dutch architecture. Its saddle roofs are propped with huge pillars.

In 1883, the right and left wings of Du Pavillon were expanded. However, the main part of the building were still the same. On March 4, 1892, an agreement to share money for stockholders were signed. The decision was made to give more financial supports for the hotel construction. The hotel’s role and location became more significant once Tawang Railway Station was opened in 1913. At that time, there were railroads in front of the hotel. Now, the railroads are no longer seen since the train doesn’t operate at Bojong / Pemuda Street anymore.

Former "Vereenigde Javasche Houthandel Maatscappijen"

Dr Karyadi Hospital (formerly: Centrale Burgerlijke Ziekeninrichting)
During my childhood, I was hearing that my grand father described this hospital building as "CBZ", just a simple and short acronym. Now, I know that "CBZ" is and acronym of "Centrale Burgerlijke Ziekeninrichting", a Dutch term which is related with the function this building as Central Hospital in Semarang City. History noted that CBZ is founded on 1925 by Dutch Colonial Authority.

Siranda Resevoir
Siranda Reservoir is an old clean water reservoir built during Dutch Colonial Era. A lettering on the wall mentions a text of '1912', this may indicates that the building is already there since more than hundred years ago.

Siranda itself is relates with an uphill road, a transition road that connecting Semarang's down town to upper town area. The reservoir building is actually a dome-roofed building that covers with green grass layers over. A small copula tower with ventilation louvers is situated on the peak and around the roof domes. There are two reservoir domes in Siranda Reservoir complex. The new on is built around the year of 1923.

Jombang Resevoir
Jomblang Reservoir is another remaining old clean water reservoir in Semarang that built during Dutch Colonial Era. Jomblang reservoir looks slightly bigger than The Siranda Reservoir. As similar as Siranda Reservoir, the building consist of two big domes. The appearance of the reservoir building is always visible as a silhouette of big dome with a copula tower on Tanah Putih Hill.

Actually, the building appearance of Jomblang Reservoir is similar as the first older reservoir building belong to Siranda Reservoir. It also found at the Jomblang Reservoir same grass covered big domes, same small copula tower on the of the dome and also same entry facade. Anyway, the existence of these two old clean water reservoir buildings becomes one of the evidence that originally Semarang City is already well planned since almost hundred years ago.

At the west-end side of Semarang harbor, this hundred years old lighthouse tower is found and still standing tall. A white painted tower in decagonal shape that made off steel plate and steel framing works is still standing strong to watch seaside scenery around Semarang harbor. Based on history reference notes this lighthouse tower is built on 1879 according to permission of the Dutch's King Willems II and the construction works is completed on 1884.

Textile Museum, Jakarta, Indonesia

The building of Textile Museum was built in the early 19th century. Initially the building was a private house of a Frenchman. The building was later sold to Abdul Aziz Al Mussawi al Musa Khadim, a Turkish consulate for Batavia. In 1942, the building was sold again to Karel Cristian Cruq.

The building had been used as the headquarters of Barisan Keamanan Rakyat ("Front of People's Safety") during the struggle for independence period. Later in 1947, the building was owned by Lie Sion Phin who rented it to the Department of Social Affairs which modified it into an institution for aged people. Afterwards the building was handed over to the city's government and on June 28, 1978 the building was inaugurated as the Textile Museum by Madame Tien Soeharto.

National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia

The current building was located at Koningsplein Oost No. 14, Batavia (now Jakarta). It was built in 1817 by G.C. Van Rijk as an Indische Woonhuis (Indies residence) in a Dutch Indies colonial style. The materials for the construction were taken from the remains of Kasteel Batavia. In 1900 it was converted into a female dormitory building as part of a HBS educational institution known as Carpentier Alting Stiching(CAS), under the authority of the priest Albertus Samuel Carpentier Alting (1837-1915) from the order of Freemasonry.

National Archive of Indonesia (formerly: Reiner de Klerk house) (1760), Jakarta, Indonesia

Van der Chijs was appointed the first archivist of the Indies on 28 January 1892 through a government decree. Although van der Chijs regarded his work as provisional, his successors did not continue the work to document the VOC archives. In 1925, the collection was moved to the former country estate of Governor-General Reynier de Klerck, where it remained undamaged during the period of Japanese occupation. When the Dutch transferred sovereignty of the Indies to Indonesia in 1949, the collections were handed to the current National Archives. They were finally moved to the new location of the National Archives in 1975.
